I like characters with "contrast cute" in appearance or personality:

Since I originally got into otome games through voice actors, the presence of my favorites is the biggest deciding factor for me. I also pay some attention to the production company, though it isn't necessarily a deal-breaker; there is a sense of reassurance knowing that a game comes from a production company I've played titles from before, as I can expect a good story and satisfying endings.
