Has anyone ever hired a Japanese VA for a personal project? I’m thinking of hiring one but I honestly have no idea where to even start

Sorry if my English sounds a little awkward, it's not my first language.

So, I'm an indie game dev and I'm still pretty new to all of this. My games are usually around an hour long and contain some NSFW scenes. I'm hoping to hire a Japanese VA for the love interest in my game, but I honestly have no idea where to start.

I've been following a few VA I really like, but I don't know how I'm supposed to contact them or what the usual rates are. On top of that, I'm not Japanese and my Japanese isn't good either, so I'm kind of stuck right now.

I don't really have anyone around me who I can ask for help with this, so I guess I'll have to figure everything out on my own somehow 😭

I think this might sound like a bit of a throwaway suggestion, but I genuinely think it could work: ask Gemini or ChatGPT for help with the language and etiquette when reaching out about work opportunities, or even just how to get started.

That said, I think the VAs would probably be really happy to have the opportunity to work on a game from overseas. It would be something new for them and probably a really interesting and valuable experience.

Is your game in Japanese, or you want them to read a text in a foreign language? Do you want to hire a professional or an amature? This can drastically change the amount of money you will have to spend.

If you follow them, people often write addresses for work-related questions too

I think if you really want to try, you'd have to at least hire someone with business-level Japanese to discuss the offer with the VA/their agent. They should have some type of business email to contact them through.

Some seiyuu looking for work will have their rates listed along with samples of their work and I think it's generally ok to DM them. Are you going to get your game translated? I do agree that it's a good idea to get help from a fluent Japanese speaker in general

Aside from that it really depends on your budget + and you'll have to search for someone who is willing to do a home recording (宅録納品) so you won't have to pay for or be present in an actual recording studio.

Here's a blog post I found that could be helpful regarding all that:

And here's a portfolio site connected to dlsite so you can get a rough idea of what people charge per character or look for work: https://voisuko.com

Good luck!

If you are referring to JP seiyuus, a lot of them work under an agency like the ones owned by Suzumura Kenichi, Kakihara Tetsuya etc. perhaps try finding their agencies to contact them?
