Is there a popular otome game that everyone loves but you just can't stand?

love and deepspace, i tried playing it before but I just can't get used to it, and Cupid Parasite i guess.

it's Love and Deepspace. I know it's incredibly popular, but I just couldn't get into it. The graphics are beautiful, but the gameplay and story didn't really keep me interested. I can understand why so many people love it, but it's just not my type.

I don't know if the game is very well-known in the English-speaking community, but it is in the Spanish-speaking community, and it's My Candy Love (also known as "Corazón de Melón" here). It was the first otome game I ever played on my mom's computer (back when I was a little kid with no supervision). I loved it, I adored the game with all my heart. I loved the art style, the outfits they offered for Sucrette (the game's MC), I never missed the YouTubers' gameplay videos, and even the arguments the players had about who was better, Nathaniel or Castiel (I was Team Nathaniel). The best part for me was the story and the boys' routes. Everything seemed perfect to my little self until I realized I'd run out of Action Points and that this was "the end of me with the game." I never touched it again, and it turns out I only made it past episode three, as far as I remember.

And after years of not playing, when the university era arrived, I was amazed. It motivated me to start My Candy Love again, so I decided to begin from scratch with the high school era to understand the story, and OH MY GOD, I didn't think it would be torture.
Sucrette is a terrible character. I can't believe that the protagonist who "represents us" was so unbearable. She acted like an idiot with the game's love interests, and each decision was worse than the last, leaving you no choice but to pick the most decent one (both equally awful). And those love interests themselves were red flags. The game was supposed to be aiming for realism, but then you have a fairy godmother, and well, it's no surprise that the Action Points issue was never resolved.

Perhaps it was the nostalgia factor, but I went back to the game two years earlier hoping the story would improve, but because of Sucrette, it was difficult. I tried to go back again and again, but each time I doubted myself, and my progress only got as far as episode 11 of the high school, with 3698 AP and 959 coins that I haven't spent.

Bustafellows.

I wouldn't say I can't stand it, but I just don't get the hype at all. I found the plot very underwhelming, and wasn't impressed with the vibes of the LIs.
I only did the routes of the LIs that interested me-Scarecrow and Helvetica…I was pretty disappointed.

For some reason, Love and Deepspace struggled to keep my attention I think it's because I didn't really like how ambiguous it was about the route
 
i think it was utapri for me, it was absolutely everywhere and popular couple years ago, but i cannot stand the first game, i'm so sorry the art throw me off :') then the remake with new art released, it still kinda threw me off, and the school settings story is just not for me i guess ┑(￣Д ￣)┍

but the music, dayuumm I loooveee it, I worshipped anything made by elements garden and Agematsu-san, those are the best part of the franchise <3
 
I'd have to say Juuzaengi. I just couldn't get into the idea of Guan Yu being the MC, and her personality didn't feel like Guan Yu at all...
 
Taisho x Alice - Heads and Tail...

The devs ruined the resolution of the 1st game to make that FD.
The 1st game could've been better otherwise.

Cupid Parasite.... I wanted to play it so bad but after finishing Ryukis route I got bored and haven't opened the game since
 
Starry☆Sky was really popular at one point, so I finally gave it a try after being curious about it for years. Unfortunately, it just wasn't for me. I usually love taking my time reading the dialogue, getting to know the characters, and seeing how the story unfolds, but this was one of the few visual novels that genuinely bored me. The pacing felt painfully slow, and I never found the characters interesting enough to stay invested. I can see why some people enjoy it, but I just couldn't get into it.

Hakuoki... pretty naive at times, and some of the routes are very similar to each other. There was too much boring, repetitive text and too little romance.
Cafe Enchanté. I tried to start reading it several times, but... I can't really explain it. It just feels like something is off. Also Bustafellows felt weak and I didn't find the LI attractive.

I'm too specific with my tastes so other games tend to be big misses for me.
If it's hyped everywhere, I'm less likely to pick it up /welp

A few titles that comes to mind:

Ken ga Kimi - I really wanted to like it but it probably ended up way too complicated for my liking (love Saneaki back then)
Bara ni Kakusareshi Verite - I read a bit too much about that time period and felt bad for how Marie Antoinette is actually written (even knowing it's fiction, sorry!).
Collar x Malice, Code Realize, Taishou x Alice, Ozmafia too

I feel a little bad saying this because I know it's such a beloved game, but... Code: Realize

I'd read so many amazing things about it that I went in with really high expectations. Maybe that's part of the reason, but it just didn't click with me as much as I thought it would. I still enjoyed parts of it, but overall I ended up feeling a bit disappointed compared to what I was expecting.

I guess it just wasn't for me, even though I can totally understand why it's so loved. 🥲

Diabolik Lovers. I have no idea how this trend started in the vampire genre, but so many female leads have that insecure personality trait—and on top of that, they always have that "Frodo look." I just can't stand it; it really annoys me.

It's not like I can't stand Taisho x Alice. I just can't get into it, i don't really like the game, so I finished only the first episode, and can not make myself play more

i HATE cupid parasite. there are definitely worse otome games out there but this one genuinely made me so mad lol. i'm a huge nerd when it comes to greek and roman mythology so i went into it with pretty high expectations and... yeah, it was a terrible experience for me

i know the game is obviously not trying to be a serious retelling of mythology but some of the choices they made with the characters and mythology just really did not work for me. instead of being fun and silly a lot of it just ended up annoying me. i know it has a huge fanbase and i can totally understand why people enjoy it but personally i could never get into it lol
 
Out of the ones I've tried, I had a strong dislike for Taisho x Alice, Code:Realize and Norn9. Now that I think about it, Otomate games are the ones that I tend to drop with more frequency...

can't say anything about Hakuoki since I was never curious enough to try it.

First, I can't say anything about MC (who just sits in one place, while occasionally trying to talk to Dante or run away).
Second, near the end it just felt like a mess to me, with things happening either too fast or somewhere on the background (like death of some character that affect the other one) and weird plot twists game just throws at the player.

Maybe other routes are better, but after Dante I felt so bored and uninterested in the rest, so I dropped it.

Omg I totally feel the same! I 100%-ed Piofiore, but other than Yang's route the whole game felt like a struggle. I expected a fast-paced mafia game and I literally got a "how to make mafia guys babysit Lilia" game instead. The mystery was interesting and the art was nice, but everything else was super boring for my taste. I didn't even bother playing the sequel...
 
It's been mentioned here before but Cupid Parasite really didn't do it for me. I just didn't like the humour and most of the characters were just a bit annoying...
