If you’ve already played a game that hasn’t been localised, would you play it again once it has been localised?

So, since my post I actually learned a bit more about Aksys. I wanted to investigate this properly, and what I found was even more upsetting than what I could anticipate.
Wow, such a garbage company. How do they still stay in business? Why do people continue to give them money? Please have some more self-respect, folks!

I wouldn't play it again, as I feel that reading the original text is the best way to understand the plot and the characters' personalities. I'm not saying this applies to everything—there are plenty of games where the localisation is quite good—but some are simply terrible. What's more, in some localised versions, characters speak in dialects, which feels jarring when reading in your own language; it makes me feel the characters seem rather odd.

If i liked the game then i would replay it again with proper localization, heck eventually i am going to replay hakuoki for the fourth time, because the steam version translation was questionable, and the switch version should hopefully have better translation.

I don't really like replaying games in general, and the quality of localizations, alas, usually isn't something worth looking forward. I might give it a try though depending on how much i enjoyed the story

I really love the game. There is an official translated version, and I will definitely find time to pass the game. Machine translation is not as good as the official manual translation, and the semantic expression is not perfect, and it cannot convey the artistic mood and interest of the original work 100%.

I can understand 70% of Japanese without machine translation, but I still want to see the official translation. Is there any difference between the two?

It depends if I like the story, if not then I don't feel the pressure to replay it with official translations

i want to say that i would, buuut... i'm playing unlocalized games with machine translators, and if their so-called "official translation" is the same stuff, then there is no reason to do it.
but if it is like really good and accurate official-official localization, then yeah, i'd play it one more time, to better undestand some moments

I would definitely play it again. I've done this already with Diabolik Lovers HDB and other titles from the franchise but I feel like with that back-and-forth of advancing through the game and reading the translation from another source it has made me confuse some details. So I would definitely like to properly read it from the official translation in-game

Umm I haven't played many non-localized games but if I really liked one, I'd play the localized version too. I'd probably forget half the story by then anyway

If I enjoyed the original game's story enough, I would certainly play it again after localization; if the game was uninteresting to begin with, I wouldn't revisit it. Localization can polish the experience, but it can't transform a bad game into a good one.

Yeah, exactly! Most of the games I play are in Japanese, and my translator does a really rough job lol. So like, half the time I have to piece together the story myself. That's why I'm always genuinely happy when a game gets an official translation.

To be honest I avoid playing Japanese games although I am quite sure I can understand most of the content by only hearing characters' voice and don't care much about the text, only when there're voiceless texts or something I don't understand. But I have plan to replay Un:Logical if I like it (I haven't started playing) and it has been localized.

But maybe I have to reconsider this habit when I learn about Aksys games' quality via this thread...

I don't usually replay my otome games (the exception is when it gets a fandisc that I want to play), and the fact that the game is now localized doesn't change that. So no, I'm not playing it again in the localized version. But if I did, I can easily imagine myself criticizing the localization for not being accurate enough, and getting distracted by that 😅

I prefer playing games in their original language whenever possible. Something always gets lost in translation, and most of the localized versions in my country aren't that good anyway.

If I liked the game, then I do play it again when the localized version comes, especially for games with a large gap when it was localized vs when it was released. It gives me an excuse to play the game again and feel nostalgia over the character I liked xD.

Also, there are parts in nonlocalized games that I most likely missed or misunderstood. So its nice to play the localized to fully understand the game.

I probably won't; I'll just keep playing the Japanese version...

Sometimes there are translation errors.

If I understand the language, I may not play the localised version because I concern about the quality of translation.

No, unless it's one of my favorite games, I wouldn't. Since a localization inevitably includes some of the translator's own interpretation, I'd rather experience the original writing as it is than replay the game with an official localization.

I'll definitely play it again. Experiencing a game in my native language is always much more enjoyable. I probably won't replay every route, just my favorite ones.

I play unlocalised games really slowly. And if it would get the localization, I would definitely replay it one day. But if I liked the game really much, I would definitely replay is as fast as the localization would come out

I used to think that a machine translation was good enough. However, after actually playing a localised game, I found it much more immersive and comfortable to play. If it's a game I really enjoyed, I think it's definitely worth playing again once it has been localised.

If I really liked the game then yes 100%!
I don't know Japanese so I'd love to understand the story better once it's localized!
Knowing the language helps get those little details you might otherwise miss.
