Looking for BL game recommendations!

It's been a while since I last played any games due to my busy schedule.
I've played titles like DRAMAtical Murder, sweet pool, and PigeonBlood, which all tend to have darker and more twisted storylines.
I'm looking for some new BL game recommendations. While I enjoy the dark stuff, I'm also open to lighthearted or healing/wholesome types this time. Thanks in advance!

If you want to play another one of Nitro+Chiral's games I'd recommend Lamento or Slow Damage. Lamento is my personal fav, I really love the setting and characters. Its a bit more lighthearted than DMMD was, but still has n+c's typical bad ends. Slow Damage is their newest game and its also really excellent. The game is gorgeous and the overarching mystery is deeply compelling. It's definitely a darker game in tone/themes/story, even more so than Sweet Pool imo. If your schedule is still busy, fair warning that both of these are pretty long.

Other than those, I'd say Lucky Dog 1. I just finished playing it for the first time and had a blast. The tone can bounce between lighthearted and dark pretty quickly, but it's done in a way that doesn't feel clunky. The MC, Gian, is one of my fav protags. I loved watching him interact with each LI and his VA is was great. This one's probably more medium length.

If you don't mind English-only games, I would recommend Seiyuu Danshi and Banana Ranch for something light-hearted.
Of course you need to dive into them without expectation for the story, the writing can't be compared to Japanese BL classics... Their strong points in my opinion come from the amount of gameplay content.
There are many gameplay elements, you can pick locations on a map, use items, manage stats and such. The seme/uke roles can be reversed (if you're into that) so there is somewhat freedom in the way you want to play. The art is beautiful for the large number of cast too.

Thanks so much for the recommendations! Since I'm a huge fan of the oppressive atmosphere in Sweet Pool, I'm definitely interested in Slow Damage.
However, considering my limited gaming time lately, I think I'll start with Lucky Dog 1 first. I'll save Lamento and Slow Damage for when I have a bigger block of free time to fully dive in. Really appreciate this list!

I'm quite curious about the gameplay elements you mentioned! Having more freedom with map locations and stat management sounds like a refreshing change of pace from traditional visual novels. Since my schedule is a bit tight right now, these lighter, gameplay-focused titles might be good for a quick break. Thanks for sharing these with me!

Ive reently finished Paradise and loved it! It has a dark theme and is from the same makers as Pigeon Blood (which I havent played yet) so you might like it. It has two fandisks as well and i'm currely playing the first fandisk. Apart from that I second Lucky Dog 1 as well as the rest of the N+C games :D
Nie no Machi has a darker theme but so far I've only played the censored version (due to my own stupidity, I didn't realize the eng version is the censored one). I assume the uncensored jp version will have a lot more dark content.

I hope you like Paradise :D PilSlash has developed more games but I haven't played the rest of them yet so I can't really recommend them based on my own experience (I do very much enjoy darker content as well) but I know they've also created Shingakkou -Noli me tangere- and that might also be up your alley as it's also pretty dark-themed from what I understand.

I would like to recommend Shingakkou -Noli me tangere- too! It's a bit horror-oriented, but the story and characters are amazing! You should definitely play it at least once.
And the Paradise series,made by the same company as PigeonBlood and Shingakkou. It's also interesting worth a try.

The 2 BL VNs I'm playing currently Tokyo 24-ku and Suito wa Hakumei are more vanilla compared to other Japanese BL VNs, I think all of the r*pey stuff is in bad ends only. And while technically it's an Amare (choose MC's gender) and not BL I'd definitely recommend Bewitching Sinners too.

Check out Paradise and see if you like it. It can be a depressing game but the dark comedy and writing style is great, especially if you can read in Japanese. Azuma is one of my favorite protagonists. He's an angel.

"Lucky Dog 1" is a game that truly delivers. It remains one of my favorites even after playing numerous BL games. Due to its gangster-related theme, the plot may have a slightly darker tone, but overall, it's lighthearted.∪•ω•∪

I recommend Dystopia no Ou, it is so hard to find a BL game that can have me laugh out loud most of the time (here is having my favourite BL protagonist!!! So sunshine but not naive), overall atomosphere is light but in bad end and some route still quite brutal

Good writing is relatively common in BL game, I enjoy Tokyo Satsujinki Gakkou no Kaidan and Paradise (but Azuma is so poor, sometimes I hope I can skip some parts...)

Omert chinmoku no okite, which is wonderful and the protagonist is switch depending on the route you take. There's also Paradise, I personally like the Mitsugi route. Both of these games have dark subject matter but are fun.

Hashihime of the Old Book Town is my jam

It's like a fever dream that blends dark psychological mystery with chaotic comedy. The protagonist is a struggling, delusional writer whose internal monologue is hilariously cynical, it gave me plenty of laughs even as the plot dives into trippy, twisted territory of a murder mistery

For something less dark with good writing I totally recommend Taishou Mebiusline and Lkyt! Kintouka has a slow start but it's one of my fav BLs. I also second everyone who suggested Hashihime and Shingakkou. Tokyo 24-ku is politic-heavy and takes place in modern time but the writing is top tier I never got bored when playing it

The last game I played was The Town of Nie. It had a unique atmosphere, blending elements of horror with a setting where the real world and the afterlife intersect. The playtime is relatively long, and there are multiple endings, so I really enjoyed unlocking each one. If you like atmospheric BL games, I recommend this one.

I love Lamento! If you enjoy RPGs, cats (lol), and fantasy settings, you will definitely love this game!

If you prefer a historic Japanese setting, I recommend 大正メビウスライン and 古書店街の橋姫々!

Some of these have been talked about, some of them haven't. All have been localized, so available on Steam or MangaGamer or Jast.

These devs tend to produce some quality games - but also, read the content warnings because most of them are a bit disturbing or dark in a variety of ways. That said, I truly think they're all pretty great in their own ways. Also, generally everything listed below has full voice acting, which is one of the things I tend to look for in my visual novels.

ADELTA
features: kinetic novels, dark themes

Hashihime of the Old Book Town: time travel + existential horror + the most whimsical and strangely relatable MC I've ever read.
UuultraC: gay kaiju.

Langmoar
please both of these are OLD. gameplay and UIs were made like, 20 years ago, and it shows.

Absolute Obedience (Zettai Fukujuu Meirei): two secret agents take on various missions, most of which involve seduction and interogation.
Enzai: MC is falsely imprisoned and has to survive both inmates and the truly depraved prison guard, warden, and prosecutor who put him there.

MADA Labo
features: modern day, somewhat ridiculous situations, mc is always seme, and also (usually) a bit of a jerk

Love Love Sexy Salaryman: kinetic novel, very short; wandering gigolo falls in love with a woman over the internet, but actually no, he's a man, it's fine, that's no reason not to have a lot of sex.
Naked Butlers (Hadaka Shitsuji): college student takes a sus job to be "master" in a house of butlers, learns the ropes, then proceeds to abuse the hell out of them because he's an objectively awful person. Also, lots of sex.
Naked Butlers (Hadaka Shitsuji): Sugrar & Spice: sequel to Naked Butlers. More sex. Suprise!
Patient S Remedy (Kana S no Kyuusai): MC catches a fast-acting fictional disease, but apparently his bodily fluids hold the cure. He "treats" other patients, so - sex. Lots of it. Also more semen than you will ever know what to do with.

Nitro+CHiRAL
features: dystopian themes, gangs and violence, mc is always uke, you can sleep with two characters who aren't actually love interests

Dramatical Murder: Almost everyone if familiar with this one, so I'll just summarize it as "screw all of you, and your little dog too."
Slow Damage: MC self-destructs in the name of art and trauma; the relationships he builds have the potential to help him grow and overcome - but can just as easily become toxic to both him and his partner.
sweetpool: psychological horror in a high-school setting.
Togainu no Chi (Lost Blood): framed for murder he didn't commit, MC enters twisted battle-royal to earn his freedom.

parade
features: dark themes; MC is not always a good guy. also, so much slurping. slurping noises you will never be able to unhear. if you're into that, great. if you're not, you've been warned.

LYKT.: samurai-inspired setting, MC has to blood-bonds with love interests to survive an apocalypse.
No, Thank You!!: amnesiac seme sexually harasses co-workers while you, the reader, try to figure out what's going on.
Room No. 9: very dark, but thought provoking; MC and childhood friend are kidnapped and stuck in a room, forced to do things of either a violent or sexual nature to each other. Game designed to desensitize you in the same way it does them, and it's kind of horrifying.

PIL/SLASH
features: psychological and physical torture, uncomfortable situations and extreme distress

Masquerade: Hell Academy: high-school blackmail followed by a hostage situation with forced compliance devolving into depraved acts and psychological torture.
Paradise: scenic island getaway becomes survival-focused psychological horror.
Paradise: Musubi: Sequel / fandisk to the first game.

Lucky Dog 1: MC is blessed with crazy luck and tasked to break 4 high level capos out of prison in a joint jailbreak. Aside from just the usual content warnings like sex, violence, and non-con - be on the lookout for watersports and NECROPHILIA.

√ZOMBILiCA

The Town of Nie (Nie no Machi): MC becomes trapped in a world between life and death and has to learn to navigate, survive, and maybe find a way home.

Also, they're not out yet, but MangaGamer announced they will be localizing Ooe (ADELTA) and Lesson (parade), so two more translated games to look forward to in (hopefully) the next year or so.

And now for something COMPLETELY different...

BL Visual novels that that were written in languages that are not Japanese.

Bewitching Sinners (Miss Xero): no voice acting, English. Not a BL in the strictest sense because you can pick the gender of your main character. All love interests are male, so if you pick a female MC, it's an otome. If you pick a male MC, it's a BL. Art style and story telling are so good, and game is a drawn, written, and coded by a single dev. There's an 18+ patch on her Patreon, too.

Beyond Eden (Studio Pieplus): partially voiced, Korean. Victorian psychological thriller and tale of revenge. Very dark and very good. There's a sequel available too, that's a LOT lighter.

The Divine Speaker (Two and a Half Studios): fully voiced, English. Fantastic writing and world building, and not a hint of non-con in sight. Fantasy setting where the MC is banished from his home at the start of the game, and both you and he discover an entire unknown world beyond the walls. I love this studio, and this is probably one of my all-time favorites.

Full Service (Herculion): partially voiced, but it's one of the only games I know that offers the option for either English OR Japanese, depending on your preference. A lot lighter than other games on this list - a LOT of sexy times and happy endings to be had. But there is some darker underlying subject matter, and it's definitely worth playing through to the end at least once.

The Symbiant (HeartCoreDev): fully voiced, English. Fantastic writing and world building. Sci-fi space journey with a single love interest and some fantastic chemistry. Also, tentacles.

Voice Love on Air (SoftStar Entertainment): partially voiced, Japanese. But the studio that put it out is Taiwanese, and it got its English release at the same time, so I'm putting it down here as it was never localized in the same way the Japanese games above were. This is a stat-raiser rather than a strict visual novel (but it's got routes and love interests, so I still think it counts), and it's SUPER wholesome. Got some interesting game play elements, too - you have your own recording studio, and you're recording BL dramas to make ends meet. Recruit voice actors, train your stats, pick your work - and then you ACTUALLY record the dramas, which is pretty neat.

... tried to contain myself, sorry. At least I didn't tackle the games that HAVEN'T been localized yet. That's a whole other novella.
