Have you ever shipped two guys in an otome game?

okay, well the nicola dante thing is kinda funny. Sometimes when you play a route and the LI seems more interested in another character in general, it can be pretty frustrating/upsetting LOL. But nah, I'm not interested in BL pairings at all so it's never crossed my mind.

I definitely align my expectations with genre conventions (only heroine x LI in otome and etc).

So when there are content warnings upfront, then I will enjoy it with my eyes wide open.

I see these warnings often with doujin/independent games but not with commercial releases - which I'll give a big side eye because if it's released as "so-and-so" - why is there any reference of a "bait and switch"

i.e. otome game > but has LI x LI references

It's inappropriate and disrespectful; worse if it's a paid content :x

This kind of reminds me of the LADS situation of shipping the LI's and the whole plot of Kiss Him Not Me. I stopped playing otome games but yeah I feel like I couldn't really ship them unless they have some (if any) interaction together. I mean if they do then sure I think it's fine for people to ship them and even if there isn't any interaction, there's no harm in headcannons right? It's all fantasy in the end and we are all just trying to live happily

people who ship male characters together in otome shouldnt even play otome in the first place. if you wish for bl, why not play bl games? they could use some support anyway. i never ship lis together and i think very negatively of those who do

and also, "lis have more chemistry with each other than the heroine!!" is cope which is always based on nothing and is being used as a justification of ruining fandoms. thats what happened with grmn and virche, no? otome is supposed to be a safe space for women who want to engage in some love with handsome fictional men, not be forcefed content they dont like and dont want to see (and shouldnt even see in the first place in the genre). call me too radical but thats one view ill never change
I agree with every word you said! Honestly, what is the point of playing an otome game if you're going to ignore the protagonist and ship the LIs with each other?🫩 When I play BL games, I don't ask for female MCs or ship the characters with women, so why do people have to do that with otome games?🤔

Something unbearable happened in the LaDS fandom regarding this! People started shipping the LIs and attacking the female MC, saying they wanted a male MC too. Then, when fans opposed that request, they were labeled homophobic – and to this day, the LaDS fandom has a reputation for "being homophobic" (at least here in Brazil). And all this simply because the game's fans didn't accept shipping the LIs together... I mean, come on: they do everything solely for the MC, so what's the point of shipping the LIs when they don't even care about or talk to each other? They don't even interact with one another😭 the only thing that matters to them is the MC.

I remember a lot of female players getting harassed back then! Whenever they said that shipping the LIs didn't make sense, people would reply to their posts with NSFW fanart of the LIs having sex, all while saying horrible things and making cruel jokes about the person who opposed/disagreed with the shipp... That's actually why I stepped away from both the Brazilian and international fandom. The fandom has become really toxic since then😔

Yes I remember that happening in Twitter so I mentioned it too! I think by then I stopped playing LaDS so I was shocked about hearing the drama happening. Ultimately, I feel like otome fans and bl fans should keep healthier boundaries about many things really (I know often otome fans are also fans of BL visa versa but yk). I just don't think it should be THAT strict. For LaDS, the situation just got really out of hand and went beyond what it should've been contained in (?). Because it is a Chinese company, there's bound to have been some homophobia for sure but also yeah it's an otome game not a choose your own character open to all game. Also for Mystic Messenger, I feel like I've seen a couple BL fanarts and I wasn't personally affected by it and most of the community didn't seem to care that much either.

No. The closest thing I did was joke about their interaction, but never did I think about shipping (and there was only one duo I did that throughout my 10 years history of playing otome games).

I don't have the right to prevent everyone from doing what they want, after all, this is hobby and 2D and, personal taste. But imo it's not like they lack of BL content to do that... And content targets at female with BL hints are much much more these days.

Most otoge players don't want to see BL, so I appreciate if BL shippers only share content between their mutuals instead of public sharing... It doesn't reach the taboo level (I think so), but they should know most of the community can't accept it.

I don't, but I know there are people out there who does. I understand that when people playing otome, they would want otome and not BL. This is not homophobic. But when we're talking about "shipping", it is a thing done by fans who are real people. I don't think you should regulate or attack real people for fiction. If you don't like shipping the LIs just block the tags/people. And for the people who do ship LIs together you also need to understand that you're being an "outsider" (I don't know how else to put it) and shouldn't make it too public.
ALso, the whole mess with the Lads fandom, in my opinion, is a ripple effect coming from mainland where the yumeship culture is very toxic and they attack people who ship LIs together, and one of their main hate about Valko was that he looks gay which is borderline if not homophobic.

Has it ever happened to you that you'd rather see one LI romance another LI instead of the heroine?

I can't help myself feeling this way about Nicola and Dante (Piofiore). Nicola is seriously all, "Dante this, Dante that," and I was just sitting there thinking, "Oh my god, do me a favor, grow some guts and go for him already. Everyone would be happier this way." 😂

Have you ever had a pair like that in an otome game? Which LIs had more chemistry with each other than with the heroine, in your opinion?
oh yeah Nicola and Dante. When i played Nicola route i though same. Why we need romance him? He seems more care about Dante and only about Dante. That"s why i finished only bad ending. I didn't like his route much.

Also Kamigami no Asobi . Loki route. Almost whole route about Baldur. Did he really like the main character?

Steam Prison. This is one of those otome games where I didn't like any route. Boring. But i liked reletionshop between Ulrik and Eltcreed. It was fun.

Usually i'm not ship Li's in otome . It's better play bl then. But in some games Li's more care about other Li then MC. I just don't feel they like heroine. But thanks this happens rarely.

Surprisingly, no… Although I'm definitely a fan of BL, I think it's because, in otome games, male characters are written primarily to interact with the heroine. That said, someone just reminded me that Kamigami no Asobi and Uta no Prince-sama do have potential same-sex pairings. Still, I believe whether to ship characters or not is up to each player. Personally, I just don't find BL pairings within otome games nearly as compelling as those in dedicated BL works.

Not really. While I'm not against anyone who does it (no matter how much I might disagree), it's important to remember that otome is a "man falls in love with woman" genre, and as such, the men are written to not be into eachother as much as possible (and that is assuming they have chemistry between themselves). Also, by the virtue of what otome is about, if one man fell for another man, some fans might interpret that as the man getting "stolen" from them, and get defensive as a result.

the reason is very simple: misogyny! people HATE the mere thought of women having men who only love them, which is why they try so hard to push for bl shit under the guise of "inclusivity". but the truth of the matter is, these people dont care about inclusivity or gay rights. if they did, they would read and buy and promote actual bl works, but all they do is leech off of other people's hard work. in this case, yumejoshi. people HATE acknowledging yumejoshi's purchase and fanfiction power, despite stuff like touken ranbu still surviving on yumejoshi's force alone

the fact that this kind of harassment is not just widespread but encouraged is simply disgusting. imagine if yaoi fans were met with the same attitude? like if they would gush over their favourite canonical gay character/pair, but their replies were filled with straight fanart of the character(s). same with yuri fans and straight fanart. the offending people would be torn to shreds in literal seconds. but just because these "warriors" battle against "hetslop", its seen as natural/normal? so normal in fact that some rabid fujoshi even send bl fanfiction TO THE AUTHORS THEMSELVES. am i not supposed to find this behaviour disgusting? am i stupid for pointing out that these same people are the reason bl games are slowly going extinct?

and one of their main hate about Valko was that he looks gay which is borderline if not homophobic.
this is misinformation. dog was hated because devs' resources were wasted on him instead of those with missing content (old anecdotes for sylus, 500 days without ms for caleb). the "gay" thing is something western fujoshi latched on to paint lads fandom as disgusting, when his appearance is mostly described as just ugly. like, he is ugly. not because he looks "gay", but because he literally looks and acts like the straightest frat boy around, and thats something cn fandom does NOT like
i mean, he barged into your house uninvited through a window, AND he laid on your couch with his shoes still on. all while preaching about "letting a wolf into your house". all while the game already lacked playable content for both the characters and the mechanics. no shit cn girlies would be pissed!
even to this day, youd be hard pressed to find comments about his supposed "gay" looks, because this is the least of cn girlies' concerns right now. cherrypicking "bad" comments and presenting them as "loud majority" is false, no matter how you look at it

not to mention how dog-loving fujoshi walk around calling ALL lis "gay-looking" right now. rafayel is their biggest victim, because how dare a boy look beautiful and sophisticated while still being attracted to women? hes definitely homosexual! id argue that this is way more homophobic, because this is literally reinforcing the harmful stereotypes conservative men were using, like, 50 years ago. so if you want to call anyone out on their homophobia, start with these people first.

also regarding the "toxic mainland culture": im sorry but if you come into a space that heavily relies on selfinserting, in a GENRE that heavily relies on selfinserting, and start parading how you actually love these two dudes kissing each other!, you dont get to complain about being attacked afterwards. this is exactly the type of behaviour you invited when you started acting like that. it is, in fact, extremely easy to turn around and walk away when you see a "bl ships are not allowed" warning, because, as commenters above said, bl girlies are not starving for contents (for now). its not 80s anymore, you dont have to eat scraps to satiate your fujoshi hunger. there are bl titles that call for your support, so go there and support them instead of stealing yumejoshi's hard work

This is exactly why I'll never believe delusions about LIs having more chemistry with each other over the heroine :ROFLMAO: the same type of person will turn around and ship LIs that have never even once interacted or acknowledged each other's existence. Its never once been about character dynamics or relationships, its just forcing a preference onto people who have no interest and into places it doesn't belong.

And I see some people mentioning Nicola and Dante but in each of their respective routes they were both smitten with Liliana/the heroine. They, of course, have an important relationship and outside of his own route Nicola was firm about his beliefs regarding the family and Dante, but it never went so bad that I would say they had more chemistry than each of their individual relationship with Liliana.🤔 Interpretations like that confuse me and make me think that perhaps people are projecting what they want to see onto regular character dynamics. I dont care about people making headcanons but it is annoying when canon content is purposely misread to push a narrative and you're treated like the crazy one for not believing a popular fandom headcanon, especially since I love LIs interacting in otome games and have never felt the need to ship them despite some guys having hilarious or great relationships.

Yves and Hugo lol apart from that not really, I'm also not at all fond of the idea of LI having feelings for eachother. That one amare game marketed to otome players wherein most of the LI seem to have feelings for eachother (and two of them are explicitly fwb or more) ts felt horrendous lol. Felt like I was playing a chair simulator not a dating sim.
Oh no, that's awful 😂😂😂😂
I might feel the same way as the original poster regarding some characters with whom having a genuinely strong bond, but all of them having feelings for eachother would be terrifying and unacceptable...😱😱😱😱😱

Okay first of all, I respect your points.

I said "looks gay" is one of the things, I didn't say it was the only thing the girlies there hated about Valko, because I know that it all stems from the fact that they're angry about feeling their money are not properly used for their own LI due to the lack of contents. I agree with it.

And then this is something I won't agree on: attacking real people for fiction. Parading around your BL ship in a yume space is a bad and wrong thing to do, but I don't think it deserves that level of toxicity. I don't advocate for the rights to parade BL ships in public space or that every yumejoshi must be 100% comfortable with BL ships. I just think BL shipper who are real people don't deserve to be sent death threats for their fictional ships. If you don't like it why not just stop at blocking the tags and people and disengage instead of cyberbullying (I know that it don't feel good to go out of your way to block something in a space that is for you to begin with but still).
I say this because fujoshi invading a space that was for yume happened before to Uta Prince, and the company also did pivot to caters to fujoshi more. Therefore, I think BL shipper should understand that what they're doing is not a good thing, and should keep it off public.

And then this is a genuine question. If BL shipper are stealing the LI, what do they feel about other yumejoshi who make arts with their own avatar and the LI? Doesn't that count as "stealing" too because it is not your avatar and also breaks the selfinsert? Why do I always see BL shippers receive much much more hatred?

all i can say about that is toxicity invites toxicity. bringing up bl in otome space is toxic, attacking those who bring it up is toxic, but do i think its undeserved? no, not at all. death threats are shitty no matter what, but you also have to be mindful of your behaviour in the space. and, once again, if you wish to see bl, there are still tons of actual bl works without those icky yucky boring female leads, like fujoshi love pointing out. i see zero reason for a fujoshi to choose otome over bl. at all. (aside from misogyny but thats a given)

not sure what exactly you are talking about there, but a heroine in an otome work is a vessel for the player to insert herself into, therefore drawing your own self/your persona/avatar in the place of the heroine is, in fact, normal and expected. this is the yumejoshi genre first and foremost. heroine = player. and precisely because player = heroine, pushing her aside and shipping two guys together is seen as disgusting and, frankly speaking, kind of misogynistic. you join the genre thats centered around women and tells stories for, from and about women, yet you erase those women in favour of your yaoi fetish? i will never understand that. im not a fujoshi anymore, but i do love me a good bl. but why in the world would i ever ship otome love interests, when i know i will have a better time in an actual bl work?

Yeah. But I'm not talking about people who demands official BL content, or bring up their BL ship in public space. Those are utterly wrong because you're in a different territory so you should not be demanding anything and should be mindful of your action. I'm talking about people who draw their own art and write their own fiction and post it to their own wall. Those are the people who I think don't deserve such toxicity but they still did receive. The reversed is true too, for example, a girl should be able to draw a selfinsert art with a guy from Nu Carnival (BL game), just don't make it too public or demand that other fujoshi be comfortable with it.
And one reason for having BL ships that I can think of is liking the characters' looks and personality too much.

not sure what exactly you are talking about there, but a heroine in an otome work is a vessel for the player to insert herself into, therefore drawing your own self/your persona/avatar in the place of the heroine is, in fact, normal and expected. this is the yumejoshi genre first and foremost. heroine = player. and precisely because player = heroine, pushing her aside and shipping two guys together is seen as disgusting and, frankly speaking, kind of misogynistic. you join the genre thats centered around women and tells stories for, from and about women, yet you erase those women in favour of your yaoi fetish? i will never understand that. im not a fujoshi anymore, but i do love me a good bl. but why in the world would i ever ship otome love interests, when i know i will have a better time in an actual bl work?
To clarify, because you said that BL shipper are stealing the LI, then why does seeing your LI with another woman (different avatar) not feel uncomfortable too? I'm not talking about games with defined heroine but those with customizable one. This phenomenon is something I don't understand, but always seen in yumejoshi space. I had some guess for it like it is the expected norm, or feeling camaraderie with people with same taste, but was never sure, so I was asking what you think was the case.

Wow uh, to be on topic for a bit, no, never. I don't ship guys in otome games because there is a conscious boundary in my mind. Same way I don't ship real people together. It's just out of respect.

There are so many BL mangas and other ways to consume BL content that I don't think there's a good reason to ship otome guys anyway? You can ship and even have shipping wars in sports anime fandom like Free!, Haikyuu etc. and nobody bats an eye. Shounen works are major shipping grounds too. But otome games have made their focus on hetero GxB relationships quite clear.

The guys in otome games are written to be obviously devoted/obsessed with the female MC, if somehow they lack chemistry with the MC then it's a failure in writing and relationship development. In that case I have other things to worry about than shipping guys together, because it means the "romance" part in the "otome game" isn't up to par.

The reversed is true to, for example, a girl should be able to draw a selfinsert art with a guy from Nu Carnival (BL game), just don't make it too public or demand that other fujoshi be comfortable with it.
speaking of, wasnt there a case where a girl got bullied off the internet because she shipped herself with a bl character? happened very long ago, but anyway. this is the kind of stuff fujoshi never seem to admit. honestly if fanfiction is so problematic, why doesnt everyone just stick to official content and be happy..

then i dont understand your point even more (idiot). if a character is customizable, doesnt it mean that girls would try to create an avatar as close to their own real self/selfsona as possible? im gonna assume you are talking for a "yumeshipping" perspective, aka western selfshipping. thats a completely different topic of discussion, because, bluntly speaking, western yumeshipping often gets mental. "doubles", "nonsharing", stuff like that never existed before yumejoshi stuff has hit the west. and nowadays, its normal not only to abuse and harass your "doubles", but also harming yourself because of said "doubles"
yumejoshi on jp side, even on lads' side (since customization is very clear there), dont see their fellow yumejoshi as a competition. there are just as many variations of characters as there are players/yumejoshi, which still is in line with otome as a whole, aka a heterosexual gxb romance genre. no one is expecting to only stan/main one character per person, because you, the heroine, are still at the center of attention

Yeah there was and still is. Idk if you're in gacha game spaces like hsr or genshin but people get bullied for yumeshipping with characters who have popular gay ship that are treated as "canon". If only people understand that their headcanon is not canon (offtopic).

then i dont understand your point even more (idiot).

Like, what's the difference between seeing your LI making out with another guy vs seeing your LI making out with another girl except the sexuality? I think sexuality is exactly the reason but is there any other reasons? (I'm not making any claims or arguments btw these are genuine questions)

Oh and one more thing, I think that fiction does not always reflects your real life ideology. If you like BL, it does not make you misogynist (demanding for the heroine to be deleted, for example, may be misogynist or just entitled behavior). If you don't like BL, it does not mean you are homophobic. It's okay if you don't agree with this.
I feel when people bring activism into the media they consume to feel like they are the "correct one" or "morally superior", it invites a lot of things like censorships (proship vs antiship).

the difference is either artists draw a blank state mc or yumejoshi themselves commission fanart with their specific mcs. which is still in line with otome as a whole i think. while shipping bl in otome just. erases you as a heroine entirely, therefore going against the entire genre. besides, i often see yumejoshi supporting each other if they oshi the same guy, and even if someone is uncomfortable, they just block them. no one is spamming under their tweets words like "actually he loves ME you bitch" or fanart

that i agree with, but also i cant help but think that trying to rewrite a genre for women, inviting men into the female space, trying to paint women as crazy or irrational for engaging with the genre aimed at women does read as misogynistic at times. also, i know that fictional characters are fictional, but when you label every gxb content ever as hetslop and dont think twice about writing a fic about a man stealing another man from his girlfriend/wife in a gxb fandom, it also seems malicious. like, i know people's fatigue with straight content, especially danseimuke one, but danseimuke and joseimuke romance is extremely different. maybe this is why you never see people trying to appropriate and rewrite danseimuke works?
and yes, disliking bl doesnt make you homophobic, just like liking bl doesnt necessarily mean you are a gay ally, paradoxically. i know its all memes and whatnot, but there is indeed a weirdly high amount of people who love shipping cute anime guys just to then express their disgust for actual gay men, or even bara aka the genre for gay men by gay men
censorsip is pure shit though. ill never forgive lads localization team for killing off my mahiru-niichan

Yeah it was as awful as it sounds lol, which is a shame cause the plot and art seemed really good but I just couldn't get past that aspect of the game

I'm pretty much in the same camp as most people here. I don't enjoy shipping the ros together in otome either. I play otome because I want the romance to focus on the heroine and the ros, not on the ros with each other. If a route leaves me feeling like the ro is more emotionally invested in someone else than in the protagonist, it just kills the romance for me.

The only thing I disagree with is the harassment aspect. If someone wants to make BL fanart or headcanons in their own space, I don't see the point in attacking them. Just block the tags, mute the accounts, and move on. Likewise, people who enjoy those ships shouldn't try to push them into otome-focused spaces or demand official content - respect goes both ways.

Which game was this? I follow the indie scene, but I don't remember playing this. This actually reminds me of another game I came across once, not exactly an otome/ amare, it was an interactive fiction novel but it was marketed as a romance and it had two male ros. One was hung up on his ex even on his supposed solo route, while another "solo" route wasn't really solo at all - you either join an existing poly relationship or continue dating him while he also remains romantically involved with another character. That game really was THE chair sim - never dropped a demo that fast.
