I've always wanted to! Slight snag: language barrier and I didn't know where to find them. Now I do though thanks to this thread HAHA THANK YOU! If anyone can drop other recommendation on websites for fan translated (or officially too) doujin otomes, I'd love to hear about it

Browsing freem & novelgame for short games was my favorite thing for JP reading practice for a while... rocotsu make some excellent dark games (though not all of them are strictly otome.) I also remember liking most of the works of Succulent, and offoffo. In particular Sty Holic kept making me cackle at how sadistic FMC was, strong recommend

When I think of doujin otome games I've tried, top of the list is definitely the game Second Reproduction. Former members of Heterodoxy who made this game then created a commercial game company called Operetta, and anyone who plays R18 otome games probably know of their game Koezaru wa Akai Hana(which is made by their R18 division Operetta Due).
I remember being so surprised with Second Reproduction due to how defined the MC was, because even in the late 2000's, MCs in otome games still tend to be blank slate protagonists. Not to mention that the MC was fully voiced(I think. I don't remember if it's partial or full), which is like, so rare at that time period.
Even in Koezaru wa Akai Hana, the MC there also has a prominent character. However, it seems like even Operetta Due has stopped making new titles, which is such a shame.

Used to play touken ranbu and hakuouki doujin games from princess crown years ago.They were pretty interesting.

I really enjoy doujin otome games! There's a certain kind of storytelling that only doujin games can pull off — niche content and themes that you just wouldn't find in mainstream titles. Another great thing about them is that most doujin games are on the shorter side, so for people with busy lives who still want to finish a game without a huge time commitment, doujin otome games are honestly a perfect choice.

I love doujin otome games! They are packed with the unique charms of doujin titles, such as a vast amount of scenario variations and sprite assets that you wouldn't find in commercial works, dark themes, and love interests that aren't necessarily designed to be mass-market popular! Of course, there are some works that aren't like that (lol)
My recommendation is Junsei Yasaotoko Sweet & Bitter - vndb. It has been quite a long time since I played it, so my memory is a bit hazy, but I believe the concept of this otome game was that the romanceable characters would never betray you (or turn villainous) from beginning to end. I remember there being many character sprites, which made it fun to look at.

I tried playing ドトコイ! There's a paid version on Steam, but it's also available for free download on the official website. The only difference is that the paid version features full voice acting, while the free one doesn't.
As for the gameplay, the LIs literally look like low-res dots at first, but as their affection levels go up, their illustration resolution gets higher, lol. It's a super short, lighthearted, and cute game. For anyone curious about it, starting with the free version seems like a great option!

Actually, I prefer Doujin-style works because the authors have more freedom and don't need to consider the company's decisions. Large companies' commercial works often have concerns about subject matter, resulting in more restrictions on the plot.
