UI in Otome and BL games: how much does it matter?

Many games take a more simplistic approach to the interface, avoiding cluttering the screen or taking away from the characters visuals (as you can see with CGs having understated text-boxes, when compared to the sprites more elaborate ones)

I have to say, although simple or "ugly" UI is not at all a deal-breaker to me, I think it's pretty nice when the company pays attention to little details like that. I really loved Cafe Enchante's menu-inspired UI, it was so cute navigating through the gallery and looking at the food art! I also enjoyed the menu in Bustafellows, it was very immersive, a bit tech-y and pretty clean looking too

Some games like Period Cube or Code Realize even implement title screens that change depending on the time of the day. And the former has a MMO-inspired menu, that helps to immerse you right into the game's world

In BL games, I have to say: although Dramatical Murder is not my favorite game, the whole interface is very cool and stylish. To this day, it's one of Nitro+Chiral's (and dare I say, Nitroplus') best work in UI. Lamento has an amazing interface too, the tarot theming, the card-styles transitions, floating text-boxes and portraits are absolutely gorgeous, and the the way they use it for scene composition puts it among my favorite presentations in VNs as a whole :)

Do you think a game's UI is relevant to you? Or is it something you don't really notice, as long as the game is not too hard to navigate?

i feel like it can make or break a game? its one of the things you can judge it by yourself before getting the game so i pay attention to it. like Ozmafia's art is pretty good and i was interested when i saw the game but the UI is pretty bland i should say and doesnt really suit the game(and the text box fills like half of the screen) so i don't think i will ever get the game. and a good UI that compliments the art could enchance the game but i lowkey cant think of any example right now 😭 maybe mistonia, its very sparkly

there is a saying "Dont judge a book by its cover" but thats a lie xd. A cover was made to be judged, its the first thing that you are going to see from a book. The first impresion of every person that its going to read it.

UI interface its pretty close to a book cover, if not more important. You are going to interact with it all of the duration of the game, so if its clutered or if its messy it will change the experience. Its going to be our contact with the world of the fantasy world, we are going to use it when saving progress.
it is plus all the time when the Ui its pretty and its different from others.

while i wouldnt say it's a necessity for me i do VERY much prefer if the ui of the game is pretty or fits the theme of the game well ^^ text boxes and text sizes matter from a visibility ease perspective but the overall colors used, the details as well as how the menu screens look makes a game much more memorable in my eyes !!!

in recent en release moeyo otome daoshi had such !!! a good ui i loved how the textbox looked and how the backlog screen & save screen looked as well !! there was also a chapter summary section which had these cute tabs for each route with a different themed tassel for each guy and i adored it so very much these things dont affect the game in anyway but just show thought on how they wanna focus on the games visual design !!

i really love the music box and bird themed ui of mistonia too ^^ mistonia also had this slightly grainy filter over the screen which made the entire feel of the game come across as a lot more fairytale esque which was soo stunning to me !! i really loved cafe enchante's ui too and olympia soiree's as well as variable barricade's !!

another really detailed and very well themed one is radiant tale's i loved the circus feel in the menu screens as well as how intricate the love status screen was it left a really good impression on me and i often wish other games were upto it's standard for their ui designs ><

I actually always look forward to checking out a game's UI! It's not make or break for me, though, as long as it's not like... inconvenient? Don't limit when I can save or reload... my attention span is horrendous... don't make text unreadable and unfixable if you're going for a mediocre default, or give screens blinding colors, stuff like that.

One of my favorite details is when a game's main screen changes after you finish a route; like characters showing up one after the other? Always very cute, wish it was more common.

I'm not sure if this matters, but my eyes always light up whenever I start an otome game with a beautiful and interesting UI that matches the game's theme. However, there are also some games I don't like because the UI can sometimes block the text and make it hard to read. I really like Cafe Enchante though—when I saw it, I was like "wow," especially with the menu-style interface. It feels really special

Having a cute or beautifual UI is nice, but the only real dealbreaker is font. If it is to flowery or in other ways unreadable - well, in games, where text is everything, it's a big no. I haven't seen this in big titles, but doujin games sometimes go for aesthetics instead of usefullness.

But other UI problems -- well, I've played ports of console games on PC and have seen some horrible stuff, so vns have nothing to scare me. It's nice when it's good, but story and graphics are much more important.

A bad UI can be a mild distraction, but won't stop me from playing.

Yep, fonts are so important! Going through a game becomes a chore when the font is tiny and there is no option to change the size or the font type is too fancy to be legible!

A prettier design is always better!
Usually UI design doesn't bother me unless it hurts my eyes.
I just hope font won't end up being tiny and (or) unreadable.

A pretty UI can definitely guilt me into giving a game second chances! It makes the playing experience itself more memorable even if the story is dragging- if that makes sense? I do think some games overdo it and sacrifice accessibility though. I remember dreading anytime I wanted to do something in CupiPara's menus cause, although very pretty, it was so stylized it was unreadable half the time.

It's definitely not a deal breaker for me too, but my eyes sure like feasting on pretty UI.
(In theory, hard to read text probably lowers my motivation if I have to squint but generally I play on large screens so that's not something I've faced yet.)

I'm an aesthetic kinda gworl, so I love very detailed and pretty UI hehe, it definitely upping my mood with the pretty UI and I would be more eager to spend more time inside the game
but bad UI is not necessarily a deal breaker for me as long as the plot/art is good enough <3

As you mentioned, for me the interface isn't a hindrance, but rather a plus. A menu that changes depending on the route you finish, like UN: Logical or Over Requiemz, is simply beautiful. Honorable mention to Matsurika no KEi FD, whose interface is gorgeous.

Pretty UI isn't a must-have for me, but it's definitely a plus. If they nail it, it doesn't just look good; it breathes personality into the game and shows the devs actually care xDddd

I tend to stare blankly at the screen a lot, so a pretty UI is always welcome!!

I agree with you on DMMD and Lamento. I love it when devs spruce up the little details, it feels more fresh and futuristic. Even the text chat on phone and user bubbles or reaction stickers; it is very lively! I end up willingly spending more time in the game menu mechanics than I would reading through a info dump essay dictionary slog :bored:.

UI is something with what you'll be through the whole game, so it's important to me. I don't mind if it's plain as long as it's comfortable to play (there are some really inconvenient ones…), but it's always really cool and interesting to find out that UI in a game has stylization and some other stuff, it helps with immersion too. those nice little details :akazukin_love:

A unique and creative UI can really lift your mood.

For example, Cupid Parasite and Sympathy Kiss — their color schemes are just gorgeous. The moment you open them, you can already feel that sweet, romantic vibe.

On the other hand, Virche has a darker, simpler design, but together with the visuals and music, it creates a really heavy, oppressive atmosphere. That said, the text colors and dialogue box in Lycoris honestly hurt my eyes...

Cafe Enchante's menu UI left a strong impression on me too — it was really creative.

UI design won't stop me from enjoying a game, but if it's cute and charming? Then all I can say is — please give me more!

I'm not particularly picky about UI, but I do think an intuitive layout, font size, and readability are important. A clunky UI really kills the motivation…
Lamento's UI was groundbreaking for its time and truly left a lasting impression on me.
