Genuinely curious bc alot of otomes are in Japanese and some don't get localised even after many many years…I personally did for dynamic chord, after listening to the whole cd serie i found out the game was actually an otome game and wanted to play it but since it was only in Japanese ( and is still only in Japanese after all those years ) i genuinely started learning how to read and write in Japanese since i already had a base in listening and talking ( thanks to cd dramas ) but i think it was worth it since most of my fave otomes ended up being Japanese only.
What about you ???

I did manage to play through hakuoki FD despite being below average in Japanese that was in 2016. It was after playing collar malice in 2018 which I loved it, I went to play the FD right after and realise I could get through 10mins cause the kanjis was too hard for me. So I switch the game for a Japanese textbook and I still haven't finish the FD 😅. At least i could read most stuff now but if I only can read less than 80% of a page, those get shove into my backlog until my Japanese gets better.

I didn't start learning japanese for one game in specific, but to have more options when playing otome/BL in general since there's a lot of really good games that never get localised or even a fan translation, like Nil Admirari (which I haven't played yet) and Blackish House.
And also bc I like the language :p

I actually learned a bit of Japanese when I was super young, but I forgot pretty much all of it. But then I started playing otome games, and I guess my Japanese just automatically improved? lol. My listening is decent and I can read Hiragana and Katakana, but Kanji is a bit tough for me. Speaking and writing are completely non-existent, hahaha. If this were 10 years ago, I probably would've had the motivation to study hard, but lately, thanks to translators and AI... I'm just kind of letting it go, thinking that translation tech will perfectly handle everything in a few years anyway....

If I ever do decide to study, it would honestly be just to play the Harukanaru Toki no Naka de series. I know 6 and 7 are written horizontally, but the earlier games in the series are all written vertically. It's so hard to use translation tools for vertical text, so I'd basically have to read through it all on my own... Also, side note, but I really wish the entire series would get ported to Nintendo Switch!

The desire to play Rejet games were definitely a driving force behind learning Japanese for me lol- By the time I was able to play the ones I wanted to most though, my otome standards has raised by then and they didn't exactly live up to expectations ._. (Well at least AliAli and BM specifically)

Drama CDs are definelty a better experince when you're not constantly losing track of where you are when reading a translation though

Not an otome but I started learning japanese actively through lesson by parade!! Parade has released two of my favorite BLVNs ever (no thank you and room no 9) and i NEEDED to get my hands on their newest game by all means possible. It took me around 10 hours to get through the first hour of the game, but so far I am having super fun!!!

I started learning japanese for Hakuoki. There was a fan translated version on PSP but I don't have PSP so I have to play the japanese version (on NDS) of this game. I have to use dictionary while I am playing the game xDD

I wouldn't say I started learning just for otome, but VNs as a whole were one of the main motivations for me. The first untranslated title I got interested in was Nil Admirari no Tenbin, I loved (and still love!) stories about books, mysteries and Satoi's artstyle! Although the game didn't quite live up to my expectations, I enjoyed my time with it and plan to revisit it sometime now that my understanding is a bit better

I've been studying for about 5 years now, and I can read pretty much anything, but I do neglect output a lot, so I'm not at all confident in writing (lol). I've also struggled a bit in the beginning, as English is not my first language and there aren't many resources in my native language. I'm extremely grateful for all the resources the Japanese learning community has been putting out in the last few years! From the languages I've studied, it's by far the one with the most comprehensive library of free materials :)

The first game I played was OVER REQUIEMZ.

I didn't start learning Japanese just for otome games — it just so happens that the ones I like are Japanese otome games.

I got into anime and manga first, so learning Japanese became a hobby of mine. Then I fell in love with Japanese otome games, and to be able to play more titles that haven't been localized, I started studying Japanese more seriously.

I've played about six Japanese games so far, though I do rely on translation tools. Sometimes I just want to relax while playing, so I only jot down a few new words as I go, instead of worrying about grammar all the time.
