Full romance overdrive or slow burn?

Decided to change this post as I posted it in the wrong place so question time!

Do you prefer romance to be very abrupt and pushed early or do you prefer a slow burn relationship that grows with each interaction?

It really depends, there's a lot of otome that goes into romance very early onto discovering their feelings, but sadly ONLY at the end of the game. If it is like that at the start, I would love it. I play otomes because I want to fall in love and go on dates with these guys! I don't want to do that at the end of the game! ;-; There's like no content for that at that point...

Very true! I enjoy the story between them and hate when it's cut until the end then you have to wait till the fandisc. I adore lovey dovey characters but I do appreciate a slow burn as well.

I've mentioned this a few times here before, but I usually lean toward slow burn or at least a medium pace in otome games and VNs. I like having the time to really get to know the characters and see the relationship develop naturally it just feels more rewarding with proper buildup
At the same time, I don't want it to drag on forever, so something balanced works best for me.
For anime though, I tend to prefer something a bit faster (not rushed, just smoother pacing), since I usually watch it to relax and don't want the romance to take ages to go somewhere XD

You see I agree with this a lot, but sadly I don't really see a lot of otomes like that nowadays, which is why I tend to go for the full on romance right in the beginning kind of thing. The only thing I can think for with Otomes that have that slowburn/medium is Hakuoki. Are there any otomes you recommend that have this pacing? Because I would love to try them out! ;-;

Yeah I get what you mean 😭 slow burn isn't that common these days
I feel like the "common answers" people usually mention are stuff like Bustafellows or Jack Jeanne. I've also seen quite a few mixed opinions about Senjou no Waltz, but personally I enjoyed it a lot, it definitely leans more into a gradual build, especially later in the routes depending on your choices
Another one that gives me a similar vibe (even if it's a bit more serious overall) is Reine des Fleurs. It's not exactly "romance-focused from the start," so the relationships feel more like they slowly unfold over time too :)

Funny you mentioned Reine des Fleurs because that is a game I have been obsessed with due to the artwork! I haven't had the time to play it since I have a backlog I want to clear first, but that recommendation makes me even more excited. Thanks for sharing! And yeah I see a lot of people mention bustafellows but the romance is very lacking in the end in my opinion. ;-;

Glad it resonated with you! 😊 Reine des Fleurs really stood out to me for that slow, gradual feel, even if it's a bit more serious.
And yeah, I haven't finished Bustafellows yet since I'm using Steam Family Sharing and waiting for someone else to finish it first, so I don't really have a full opinion on it yet 😅

I prefer slow-burn relationships. Even when playing otome games, those with compelling storylines always develop feelings gradually. Occasionally, emotional progression gets rushed due to limited content length.

Many modern games speed up romantic pacing to immerse players in romantic vibes quickly. They tend to set romance interests secretly having affections for the protagonist early on, even before the story starts. In my opinion, this is rather lazy writing style.

It really depends on the writing for me, the love needs to make sense and the development must be logical =)) but I think I prefer slow-burn or a medium-paced VNs. Also once they are together, I want some more content about it at well, and no need for a fandisc just to watch them lovey dovey :))

I'm all for the slow burn, the slower the better, rushed romance rarely makes sense and leaves question about what did they even see in each other exept faces. But I'd like to read something about already established couples, if fast pacing is inevitable. UuultraC had three couples, and the first one were in an established relationship, so romantic vibes were there from the start but it still looked good.

it really depends. If I'm playing a hentai, sometimes I don't care much for the story. But majority of the times that's not the case. I actually want to enjoy the story and see the characters develop a romantic relationship. That's why I realllly like visual novels with enemies to romance and usually dislike or forget the once with insta-love

I prefer medium to slow-burn romance. It sucks, because I crave the cute fluffy scenes that come before and after the characters get together, but a lot of games they tend to get together at almost the end, so there's no fluffy together scenes, but at the same time I don't like it when the romance comes out of nowhere because it breaks the immersion. I want to see the build up, and the after!

i prefer slow-burn or medium-paced romances, but i don't like it when the characters get together right at the end as i still want to see cute moments while they are in the relationship.

I like stories that unfold slowly.
In fact, I prefer the process where someone who is initially disliked or treated coldly gradually develops feelings for the other person through various events.
When I see someone who is attracted to the other person from the very beginning, I wonder, "What did this person like about the heroine?"

I definitely prefer slow burn, watching two characters slowly grow closer through small interactions, trust, misunderstandings, shared pain, and emotional buildup feels way more satisfying to me than romance that happens instantly. when the relationship develops naturally over time, the emotional payoff hits so much harder!

I love a well-developed romantic process. But I'm not a fan of stories where they get together at the very end and it just stops there—I can't count how many times I've thought, "Please show me what happens next!" I don't even mind characters who are in love from the start, as long as the game carefully depicts exactly how they fell for the heroine!

I think slow burn relationships are way better because they actually feel real. It's more satisfying watching two people slowly grow closer, learn to trust each other, and eventually realize how much they mean to one another instead of them just falling in love immediately for no reason.

I prefer a build up to a good pay off; rather then a stagnant progression. (≖ᴗ≖✿)
 
I'm gonna be honest, I'm just in love with love. Romance all the way, I want as much as I can get.
