If you were able to get rid of any one trope forever, what would you choose?

I can see how some of these can be narratively compelling but they just stress me out too much:
  • Cheating trope
  • Not getting along with a female character because they're a love rival :'[
  • When childhood FTL has a huge age gap (why can't they just be close in age OTL)

Dead girlfriend/wife trope where the dude is still clearly grieving and fixated on his past love. It isn't as bad if he's had time to heal and come to terms with it, but otherwise it makes you feel like a cheap replacement or you're intruding on sacred ground so to speak. Plus it tends to take over the narrative where it focuses on their relationship rather than yours.

I also dislike it when a female side character is used purely as rival in the love triangle, which they then lose. Prominent female characters outside the MC are rare enough in the genre, and it's a shame when they don't get depth.

When they keep talking about how smart/kind/romantic the LI or the MC is... without anything to show for it. Like is it really that hard to show all those qualities without stating it directly? It feels like your being spoonfed with nothing but air (;_;)

Childhood friends and i mean it in the especific settings where mc and li meet when child but now she doesn't remember and for some reason he does because that was the most significant moment in his whole life, I don't even know why but i despise that so much

Seconding this!! It's becoming annoying how the LI seems to only like the MC after one interaction years ago, and it's also frustrating how they keep bringing that up like that's the basis of their romance. I really like it if I can see how they fell in love, not because they were childhood friends 10 years ago.

I choose Yandere. It's hard to immerse their romantic interaction, even though it is so lovely and cute on screen. It like walking on eggshell. One wrong move will lead to an unpleasure thing or a bad ending in long run.
I know that the game will make it so loveable but I still can't handle their creepy obsession. Both 'No-one-understand-him-but-me' and 'I-can-save-him' excuses are going to make me put up with it either.
This is my opinion. If you love and like it, I'm happy for you. It just isn't for me.

Age gap when the protagonist is still a minor.

I hate routes that, for example, explore the teacher-student "relationship". They romanticize the whole situation, and all I see is a guy who should be in jail ¬_¬"

There's lots of ones mentioned already that I agree with. Hmm, I also don't like sister/brother complexes and noble idiocy (ugh). And like others, I'm tired of the amnesia trope (it's not the worst, though), but I'd rather see suppressed memories, or something else that's been done less.

Lis that treat mc badly, but it's because they "love her and he doesn't know how to express his feelings" 🥺. Basically, rude ml

I totally get how you feel!
I really wish they'd show those qualities naturally within the game. Otherwise it feels like the player is being left behind, or just told how to feel without actually experiencing it. And when the characters aren't that compelling to begin with, it makes it even worse.

It's the same with the "they met as kids" trope too—it kind of makes you go, "okay… and?" I completely agree that seeing how they fall in love is the real appeal of otome games!

Right? I know it just creates fake drama, but there are so many games or routes where the entire problem could be solved if you would just talk to one another dangit!
This! I can't stand the miscommunications, I mean why are you not asking him what is going on instead of assuming the worse? This trope is in a lot of romance genre in general. Once I see what the route is going to be just a big misunderstanding I just have to roll my eyes, just ask! Although I have seen some use this trope in unexpected ways that turns it in a 180.

LIs who are obsessed with their mothers or some other family member and either that prevents them from romancing the protagonist without issue or that they are only attracted to her because she reminds him of his family member. When I notice that in a ML I don't even attempt his route. Their romances all play out the same and are boring. I get incest is a kink but how is it a kink that services the player in some way if she's not even related to him? Or maybe I have it all wrong and its a light degradation kink of some sort. Either way I don't like it.
LOLLL the way this applies to MULTIPLE otome games, ngl I feel like it's in the weird spot of too freaky for the vanilla peeps and not freaky enough for the degens (it's me, I'm the degens). Like lukewarm coffee...

  1. Excessive lack of communication,
  2. Violent men (Especially if it's not something that will be taken seriously)
  3. LIs who cut their beautiful long hair
  4. LIs who is rude for NO reason and doesn't even know our character
  5. LIs who is older than our character and was practically their father/guardian...

There are so many... ( ꩜ ᯅ ꩜;)

Miscommunication is definitely up there, but it also irks me when some dudes have a lot of lines like "Don't you know? All men are wolves" "It's a man's job to protect a woman" "You shouldn't trust a man so easily". It works in some settings, but more than a line or two and it comes off as annoying rather than some act of chivalry.

I haven't met LIs that make me strongly dislike them yet enough for me to want the tropes gone (like, I've seen baaad villains like Mejojo and Auger from BWS, but to me they're well written and despite all the horrifying stuff in their routes I think it's worth reading their routes)

and then there's whatever Cappuccine from Virche is 🤢🤢
I think Virche would be pretty fine without him lol
and anything that has a similar character to him

edit: I got confused and used the other spoiler option instead of inline spoiler kjdhdg

NTR/Cheating, Non-con, MISCOMMUNICATION, RUDE OR ABUSIVE LIS ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY FACE NO CONSEQUENCES. And so many more =))
