Thoughts on background art & music

How much do you value good backgrounds and sound in a game? In my case, I think immersion is very dependent on how good the setting looks and feels. Even if the characters have good designs and CGs, a game with poorly done backgrounds can impact my enjoyment.

Sometimes while playing I'll even hide the UI and admire the background art for a bit. I really enjoy games with dreamy, hand painted styles. Code: Realize has gorgeous backgrounds; I also really like Period Cube's sceneries! Even Amnesia's background art, the simple, almost colorless places kinda reflects the Heroine's amnesia.

Background music is very important too! Especially with long titles. Repetitive or out of place music can diminish the impact of some scenes. sweet pool has one of my favorite VN soundtracks, it gets me right into Youji's world! Zenya's theme introduces you to the character from his very first scene.

If you have any favorite background illustration or music, please share! I'd love to see some thoughts about it :)

I find that a good soundtrack really helps me focus and get into the zone.
While I'm not as picky about backgrounds, I do love seeing a wide variety of locations, it makes the world feel much more alive :Dc

yeah i understand how u feel. i dont pay attention to the backgrounds too much but sometimes i do look at them to see what they put into it. but the background music i do pay a lot of attention to, especially since its something thats constantly playing. sometimes if i really like the song i just leave it playing and listen to it and then i see my screen dim and im like "oh yeah gotta keep playing the game." i did that a few times with ichiya's theme in varriable barricade
and omg yes i love sweet pools music as well, i was just listening to it yesterday haha

i don't pay much attention to the background, unless the otome game i'm playing has some kind of interaction with it. in my candy love, for example, there are objects you need to find in the scenery and click on to get them, etc...

although i don't care much for background music (since i always keep it low to better appreciate the characters' voice acting 😅), there are many opening themes that i enjoy!!

diabolik lovers more blood is definitely one of them, and another one that stuck with me was kenka bancho otome's one. dynamic chord's songs are very cool too!!

i care a lot about good bg music especially since im the type of person to listen to game osts while working so i tend to always note down if there is a certain track or character theme i really liked while playing a game :] one of the more recent examples i remember was when i played mistonia a few months ago and i adored the main page theme called "bluebell memories" so much i made it my ring tone !!!

i also just think a game's soundtrack really helps in it's branding and makes it more memorable for me ;;; for example cupipara has some insane and honestly almost goofy sounding tracks that really match with the game's vibe !!! i also love it when love interests have their own special theme track and allan's is one of my favorites ever !!

i tend to notice background arts less its usually in more fantasy setting where i pay attention to them since i like the pretty way they tend to be colored but i played temirana recently and some of the backgrounds it had were very gorgeous !! they were all simple but since they were animated and had really good coloring it was so beautiful and very immersive to the scene !

sweet pool really has an amazing soundtrack... all n+c games, honestly. i also liked haiiro logic's work in hashihime (a specific, very memorable track immediately comes to mind.. those who know will know lol)

and club suicide uses exclusively piano music which i really liked. music is super important to me as well, a soundtrack that stands out can stay with you forever i think!

as for bgs... maybe this is an unpopular opinion but since i read lots of higu back in the day i grew up fond of ryukishi's use of photography. i'm not super picky about them but like said above, i love seeing variety :) bonus points if they represent how the character perceives the world in some way! i didn't think about how amnesia incorporated the heroine's lack of memories into their bg art... that's nice

Backgrounds are important to me. They seem like something easy to glaze over, but when the background isn't as sophisticated, like in Dairoku, it seems off, and makes have less of a desire to play it.
I also love taking screenshots of good backgrounds from time to time.

Good BGM is also important and helps my immersion! But ultimately I'm not too picky. My favorite BGM is from OlySoi series

Yeah, the soundtrack really helps with the game branding! I love character themes, they teach you so much about them!

Not only N+C, all Nitroplus games have amazing music! I really liked the callbacks to all previous games soundtracks in Slow Damage.

I'm also into old VNs lol (I'm the type to convince my friends to play Umineko with the original art even!). I do like photography as backgrounds, I care more about how they're framed or chosen (and even edited) than how well drawn or detailed they are ;)

I like taking screenshots of backgrounds to use as lockscreens on my devices lol
Background art is a bit under appreciated, but it really makes a difference getting you into the game! Some titles have weird bg art choices and you spot it right away!

I pay so much attention to the background because I need it to match wherever the story is set, and I just really like looking at the art. As for bg music, I don't pay much attention to it.

omg i also advocate for using the original sprites... you get it (and hiii umineko liker... extremely good taste)

totally agree with you irt how the choice and treatment of images matter... mamiya: a shared illusion of the world's end also made use of them in a way i liked. it heightens feelings of unreality and loneliness that already are very present in the story plus i just found them pretty to look at

I end up paying more attention to the soundtracks than the background, so I can't think of many backgrounds that have stood out to me other than some from Lovebrush Chronicles. As for soundtracks, I really like those from Mistonia's Hope; they're all very beautiful. My favorites are Pierce My Heart, Welcome to the Abyss, and Middle of Work. The Lovebrush Chronicles soundtracks are also quite beautiful, but for me, the menu theme is the most memorable; sometimes I'd wait a while in the menu just to listen to the music from beginning to end. Another one I really like is the instrumental version of Scarborough Fair that plays on Kanato's route; I have a lot of appreciation for it because it was through that song that I discovered the singer Aurora, haha.

I do love a good background but I think what gets to me the most is the music. I'm a big music person and love to listen to soundtracks quite a bit like Persona and Catharine. One of the otome soundtracks I love is Cupid Parasite as I think it's really fantastic and fits well when you're playing the game (I even find myself staying on the screen for a while just to listen to it).

I agree with you that both background art and music are important for immersion. I also think they're important for the overall enjoyment of the game and makes the game memorable. I like when games pay attention to the small details. I don't like when games use generic background art, I like when they try to show you what the world in the game is like through the background art and not just through text. As for music, the first game that comes to mind is Cupid Parasite. Although I haven't finished it yet (I did two routes, still deciding if I want to skip Gill's route or not lol but that's a different story), I loved how the characters have their own theme/character song and really represents the character. The music in the game is really good and catchy and fits the game really well, so whenever I listen to a track from it I reminded of the character/game.

I don't generally play with the sound on, so background music isn't a big deal for me, and as for background art, I don't have a huge opinion about it. Most of the commercial otomes have at least decent backgrounds, though sometimes they look a bit off, but it doesn't bother me too much. I will say in indie otomes it can be a bigger problem- my main hatred is when they take a picture and run it through a filter that doesn't match the style of the sprites at all. It's just jarring to see it behind the sprites.

background art and music are never enough to dissuade me from a game, so even if they are bad i don't mind that much and won't drop a game because of it, but great art and music really do help with immersion. like others mentioned, all the nitroplus games tend to have such good soundtracks although i especially love the music for the n+c games (slow damage's music is so good). great music and art can get me really invested and immersed in a game

To me the background music, soundtrack and background are quite important to me since they help with the immersive aspect of the game. It also makes a game more memorable. When the background looks off it distracts me sooo much troughout the game and the music usually sways your emotions a bit as well
