Just a small pet peeve of mine but does anyone have to explain to the 10th person that no otome isekai isn't actually based on otome games? I swear on the otome subreddit there is a post every week asking for games that have otome isekai type villainesses in them. No otome games usually dont take place in a medieval Europe-type boarding school. No the otome protagonist isn't stealing an engaged guy, no, most otome female villains aren't just focused on love and have much bigger ambitions (Victoria from CR my beloved.)

I wouldn't mind people asking about it if they didn't come in acting like otome heroines are some fiancée-grabbing evil vixens bent on using their evul commoner charms against the poor noble villainess who probably has a dad who hates her because her mother died in childbirth and a non-blood-related bro in love with her

Technically.. there is one otome based on that very trope.. based on a manga of that very trope.

THANK YOU!

I will never forgive the Otome Isekai genre for painting such a skewed image of otome games because 1. Most otome games don't really have villainesses, they have villains (aka GUYS) and the ones that do have aren't anywhere near as bad or as obsessed madly in love as the ones in Otome Isekai. The closest I can think of an "otome isekai" like "villainess" is Reika from 9 R.I.P. and even then, that seems a bit like a stretch. Also that game happens in modern times.

and 2. This also paints a skewed vision for the heroine because in 99% of all otome isekais, the "heroine" is actually the real villain of the story and throws a temper tantrum everytime she doesn't get her way, leading most who don't play otome games to believe that most heroines are like that: Whiny, Evil crybabies that immediately lose their shit once things don't go their way.

At the end of the day, it's clear as day that the genre is written primarily by people who haven't played any otome games.

Don't even get me started on this. TT_TT

I'm sorry but that specific manga that popularized that trope (we know the one) really ruined people's ideas of otome games. There's no villainesses at all! (And unless there's a specific rivalry mechanic like TMGS, otomes rarely have rivals anyways (I mean LIs will have fanclubs and all like Ikki from Amnesia but I don't really count that as a rivalry... Rivalry suggests both opponents are on equal positions.))

I'm glad otomes overall aren't affected by this misinformed trend, but oh man it's exhausting to watch it keep being depicted.

It's an understandable point, but also there's something people often forget. Otome isekai is based on otome games, otome games are based on shoujo manga, and manga (especially old) often has everything Isekai has.

So people looking for the same thing in games should probably go looking for it in manga. Candy Candy or Glass Mask will be better choice than modern otome games.

A bit off-topic, but it would be pretty cool if there were otome games in this style. I remember reading a bit of the manhwa Villains are destined to die a few years ago and thinking it would be fun to play as a villainess, and the otome game All Routes Leads to Doom was really fun to play and didn't need to resort to turning the original heroine into an evil hag. They could even make a comedic parody in the style of Isekai, I'd play it!

What about "Akuyaku Reijou wa Ringoku no Outaishi ni Dekiai Sareru"?

there's a few otome isekais that i enjoy reading (mainly the ones that don't paint the og heroine in a bad light, we love our otome heroines here) but it's so clear that the genre has become so inbred, majority of them feel like copies of each other and honestly i feel like they just slap on the word otome game just for more recognition and to leech off the success of the major otome isekai series

it's just so funny that magic boarding school with princes and princesses is the default setting because from the top of my head, the ones that fit that are wand of fortune and trouble magia. i get that it's easy to write an isekai in a fantasy magic world, but imo one the major appeals of otome games is how diverse the settings are, very sad to see it be portrayed as extremely generic by people who won't give the actual games a go
