What are your thoughts about otome games with multiple protagonists?

As someone who appreciates protagonists with their own distinct personalities, I feel I have more fun playing otome games with more than one protagonist because I can appreciate the story from different perspectives. I haven't finished Nor9 yet, but I remember really enjoying being able to play as someone sweet like Koharu and then switch to someone more down-to-earth and mature like Mikoto! In HanaKare, I simply loved the four protagonists and following each of them with their own problems and how each one reacted to their respective romantic partners. Of all the otome games I've played, HanaKare was the one I was most obsessed with; I barely wanted to put down my Switch because it was so good, and I'm sure I had a lot of fun because of the protagonists more than anything else. Unfortunately, I don't know many otome games that offer more than one protagonist to play as, and I hope there will be more otome games in this style in the future (人 •͈ᴗ•͈) Anyway, I'd love to know your opinion on your preferences when it comes to having more than one MC in the game! Do you also like it? Or do you feel more comfortable with just one?

I personally really enjoy multiple protagonist games! I just commented on another post about how much I enjoy the MC's in Norn9, not just because of their distinct personalities themselves but because of the friendship between them! It's so interesting to read the introspection of different personalities, like how you mentioned Koharu is different than Mikoto for example. I've only finished half of HanaKare myself but I love the difference in MCs there as well, as it makes each story feel really unique and makes you want to see how love blossoms between MC and LI differently in each route. Variety is the spice of life!

I love otome games with different MCs! I prefer my protagonists with distinct personalities too (even if they are more passive and quiet, I also consider this a personality even though some people don't). What I find really interesting that I wish happened more in the games is when there is only one MC, but her personality and sometimes even her past changes depending on the route you are playing (I don't remember the whole story of the game, but I know Bad Apple Wars was like this and I really enjoyed it)

I might be in the minority but I prefer one protagonist.

To me, one of appeals of a commercial otome game is ✨choosing the LI✨
So the moment it becomes 1v1 like in Hanakare (Him smile bloom?), I lose all interest. If it's like Norn9, where there are 3 MCs, and each have 3 LIs, or dual MCs, I am more inclined to play them.

It seems like they might do this in the upcoming Otomate game Wakudeki (omegaverse game).

They said based on the LI you choose, the past will be different.

I prefer games with a single protagonist. That way, I can focus more on the world-building. That doesn't mean I dislike games with multiple protagonists. If it's sufficiently fun, I can play games with multiple protagonists too. There's an upcoming game with two protagonists that I'm looking forward to.

I like multiple MCs, and I also enjoy seeing the same MC in different scenarios (like Ayakashi Gohan human/Ayakashi stories) or with different personalities depending on the LI (like Bad Apple Wars or Amnesia). It's a fun change of gameplay, but when poorly done, the MCs can feel a bit underdeveloped.

I really like them! This kind of ensures that each protagonist has to have a defined enough personality so that they're distinct from each other, and the writer can specifically cater each protagonist to fit the love interests she's paired with, resulting in dynamics that are both unique and can make more sense at times. Sometimes, less can be done with a single protagonist and the writer can make her act a bit more inconsistent just to forcibly fit her with every love interest, even if it's clear that she fits with some more than others. So multiple protagonists allow the writer to design them to fit their respective love interests and the dynamics and themes they want - I think romance can be enhanced by having both characters written more specifically for each other so writers have lots of creative control in depicting the relationship that conveys the themes they want the most.

It's also interesting to see the dynamics and interactions the MCs have with each other, if they do, like in Norn9. I love Norn9's MCs and think that they have some of the strongest MC character writing, partly due to how the multiple MC set up required that they all existed as very distinct and unique characters from each other (especially since they interact so must exist as external characters of their own right outside of being only the MC or POV character since they still exist in the other routes where they're not the current MC). It challenges writers to distinguish between different characters' voices when in their point of view, so that not everyone just sounds or thinks in the same way - I really like it when the personality and perspectives and character of a POV character just overflows and shows through in even the voice of the writing and their thoughts and way of narrating, and multiple protagonists usually means that more attention is paid to things like this to distinguish between the characters. Multiple protagonists can also create contrast with each other, both in character and themes, which can strengthen the storytelling (like through parallels and foiling and the interaction between what each protagonist represents, etc). Seeing different perspectives is very interesting, and how they contrast with each other and help to provide different angles on a singular overarching narrative can contribute so much to the overall themes of the story.

On the other hand, I do still really like singular protagonist games as well, and I think that a skilled writer can keep the MCs consistent and vital (as in, it's important that it's specifically them) for each route and love interest - this instead helps to highlight slightly different sides of the MC, which can flesh her out even further while still keeping her coherent and consistent (because I don't really like it if her character just arbitrarily changes for no reason in different routes - a character acts differently in different situations, but they're still a single, consistent character so shouldn't differ in ways that make no logical sense imo, unless maybe it's like some complete alternate timeline thing? but that would still be logical in that case). It's like, through these different dynamics and interactions and story beats, more of her is characterised and revealed to the reader, and having just one central character that the story is centred around can make the main themes (and what she represents, etc) stronger and more coherent, since the protagonist is the most important character in my opinion. This main theme that she represents can be examined even more deeply through her interaction with the different love interests and the things that happen in the different routes. Like what happens when this specific character (this single MC), with the role she has and who she is, interacts with these different people or goes through these different things? It's very interesting and helps to basically reinforce the, I guess, thesis statement of the game (shown with her) through different angles (as well). Having her as like an anchor usually helps to make the themes very tight.

So basically, I like both, but it would be nice to see more games with multiple protagonists (as it's relatively a lot less common), especially if it's like Norn9 where there's interaction between them.

Most of the time I'd prefer that games with a single protagonist. But I really like otome games with multiple protagonists which is multiple female protagonists with different personalities in the same setting.I like watching how the same event can lead to different outcomes depending on who's involved and their position.Unfortunately, not many games focus on this aspect of the story.

I want to like it, the idea sounds good in theory.. but I always end up liking one protagonist more than the other(s) and wishing I could play with her for the whole game.

for me, I like to play as myself. I'm the self-insert type so having multiple protagonists, could be a hit or a miss depends on their personalities and/or struggles.

The only otome I've played with multiple protagonists was Norn9, and I did like it. Since there's multiple protagonists, they each had differing personalities which I like, because I feel often MCs tend to have similar personalities in a lot of games.

I don't mind multiple heroine in games but I don't think I would like different heroine and the same group of love interest if that happens.....

I also enjoy having multiple protagonists. Makes them feel more three-dimensional, especially when they appear in each others' routes.

It's a really fun experience for me! Despite playing as a self-insert it's really nice to play and read MC's dialogue especially when they have different personalities. I really enjoyed HanaKare since each LI had their own MC!

Ayakashi Gohan is one of my favorites because of this! It's such a unique way to change the POV.

I really enjoy those kinds of stories but I do think it requires a lot of skill to write more than one protagonist, I feel like if the writers aren't comfortable with that undertaking I would definitely prefer they stick to one protag/viewpoint.

Norn9 did it well. I would like to see more games with such options, but it is a fine line to tread as the developers have to decide whether routes are locked to one MC. Players might be biased toward one couple, the wars will be a headache
