Why do you enjoy playing otome games? What draws you to the genre?

The reason I enjoy otome games is that I love romantic stories, and I'm especially drawn to the 2D male characters ^^

I think the primary reason for me was being able to play as a fem MC. I have always liked VN and JRPGs, and I just thought playing as a man was par for the course if I wanted to read a story through a game. I thought it didn't matter and didn't bother me, but then I played a game and was surprised at how it hit so different to actually relate to an MC for once, even just a little. Yeah, there are (few, imo) other games where you can play as a fem mc, but otome at least guarantees it

Back then, a lot of the popular series had mandatory harem elements — like The Familiar of Zero or Sword Art Online. But I could never really immerse myself in them. I kept wondering — why are there so many stories where multiple girls like one guy, but almost nothing the other way around? Why weren't there more stories where several guys genuinely like one girl?
At best, what we had was a simple love triangle in shoujo manga — just the main guy and the second male lead competing. That was it. And then I finally discovered the kind of "reverse harem" dynamic I had been looking for all along… through otome games.
It felt like I had found exactly what I didn't even realize I'd been searching for.

I've always liked romance genre at books so I thought why read boring pages when you can see and listen to the book at your computer! And study japanese at the same time, it was and it is now very entertaining tool to study for me ٩( 'ω' )و

Dating men in real life made me lose faith in humanity. But first it was the art, then the genre, and before I knew it I was too involved to stop. I've always loved reading, and reading is another medium I still enjoy quite a lot. Not to mention Japanese voice actors; I really like hearing the characters' voices.

I found it fascinating that there is a type of love story where the heroine has multiple men to choose from. Little middle school me thought it was revolutionary haha. I guess overall it truly was the fantasy of romance that drew me in. I stayed for that and the seiyuuuuu, I love me a handsome character with a beautiful voice.

I am a very extreme person—I dislike love that involves calculation. When someone makes a decision, I need them to consider me completely. But at the same time, I am clear-headed: no one would actually do that because human nature doesn't allow it, and it wouldn't be fair either. An unbalanced relationship is hard to sustain in the long run. However, the character in otome games are different—their love for me is pure and passionate, entirely devoted to me. They exist in my spiritual world, and we are forever connected in heart and mind. I don't believe that in reality, there is someone who can love another person completely and unconditionally from beginning to end, without a hint of calculation, regret, or reluctance. But they can.

For me it's the dokidoki feeling and cute art!
Bonus points for voice acting and interesting plot!

I think I enjoy doing it because of the story. Virtual stories that I'll never experience in real life always entertain me.

I absolutely love playing otome games! Mainly because their storylines are exceptionally well-written, and each character's backstory is incredibly rich and compelling. When you play, you can't help but become immersed, experiencing those heart-wrenching choices and dramatic emotional rollercoasters.

I started playing otome games because of anime. I accidentally came into contact with anime and really like the characters in it. Playing Otome games allows me to immerse myself in another world, which gives me a great feeling!

When I was younger, I always knew of Bishoujo games due to how famous Air, Kanon was etc, and was jealous of guys.
The thought of being able to play a similar game, but surrounded by Ikemen instead sounded so dreamy.
So I was ecstatic when I played my first otome game (Ikemen series on mobile).

What truly sealed the deal for me was when I first tried my first console game - Nightshade. I was blown away that an otome game, where you are supposed to date guys, can have such immersive, compelling, angsty plot!
Not to mention, that is also when I got a taste of yandere…which instantly became my favorite trope even until now❤️🌹

Although I initially played Otome games purely for hot 2D guys, I ended up staying for the immersive experience, compelling stories that it provides!

this may be due to my affinity for VN format games in general though, i can't exactly recall what made me pick otome specifically up in my early teens. perhaps accessibility? i remember my first otome being re:alistair but i was also playing katawa shoujo (eroge) alongside it

I love romantic stories. Also i can date with someone that i will never date in real life like yandere or monster :D Just relaxing after hard work.

It's stuff made by women, for women, from a female pov and that's the only kind of media I'm interested in at the moment. It's also a great medium for learning Japanese so that's a plus.

When I was younger I used them as a way to kind of "escape" a stressful home life, as the few we had in English back then were mostly self-insert Deviantart flashgames that while lacking in actual story, were fun and whimsical and most importantly: female led! I was so lonely as a girl who loved video games in the late 00's/early 10's who would genuinely be looked down upon for playing my hobbies, so playing ANYTHING with a female MC made me feel so empowered (P3P MC in my user photo was the first life-changing FeMC experience I ever had!). As the genre evolved and lengthier console otomes started getting localized I found myself loving how character-driven the narratives are, and some of the topics they broach. Of course there's the odd VN every now and again that handles certain topics poorly, but the ones that handle them well do it beautifully. Also, the narratives in otome can get so much crazier I feel than other mediums? xD Which I really enjoy!

At first it was for pretty art and the romance.. but now I just really like seeing how the MC and the LIs grow and change over the course of the story and the relationships they build ;w;

At first, it felt like a romance novel. I felt sorry for the male lead who kept getting rejected. But otome games are different. Each character has their own possible ending. Plus, the beautiful CG makes the story even more immersive. That's why I love otome games.

For me it's the same reason I read any book. Escapism. A nice break from reality. A place where you can take a break from daily stress and problems for a little while and be someone else and be somewhere else. Just a little breather that refreshes the mind really helps send you back into the real world a little bit stronger!

I prefer otome together with other demographic category romance games and novels because I used to watch huge amounts of romantic TV shows as a child, and I like shipping pairings. I felt something despite my usual inability to self-insert into the characters. Additionally, I was highly bullied as a weird schoolchild, and I liked to imagine that everybody loves each other, friendship is worth it, and romantic love is placed on the same level

I think otome games are more willing to explore certain taboos and offer a form of escapism that I don't find in any other type of media. After all, it's fiction! And I find that otome games are more willing to push the boundaries of that.
