Does anyone else get annoyed when your choices don't actually matter?

I don't mind it too much, but only when it doesn't have too many of them. I do think having a bunch of useless choices it's kinda bothersome, it would be better to make a kinetic novel.

Absolutely, I believe that the whole point of letting a player choose is to meaningfully shape the story. It's a bummer if my choice is about to change two lines of dialogue and nothing else, it might as well not be there then.
But the above is honestly just a minor inconvenience. Mixing important, route-changing choices in with those useless ones and making it ambiguous which is which... now that's a problem (unless you give up and just use a guide I guess).

i dislike it most when they make it so your choice didn't actually matter at all and it's just a longer path back to the option you didn't choose

omg at the very first time while playing otome games I was thinking about my choices can not influence the story but the "シナリオ" decided!
I can accept that but still confuse sometimes, and if the heroine doing red flag behavior I get really intense...
And excited about what will happen, how the ikemen react! I love drama moment.
:ROFLMAO:

Pretty much. The only mechanic in otome games is the player's power to influence the story, so if the choices have no impact whatsoever, it gives me the impression that I'm just reading a linear novel. That's why I avoid games like those from Genius Inc. and I love Lovebrush Chronicles (the main stories)

I don't really have a strong preference, but sometimes I wonder, "Why even bother having a choice here?" That said, most otome games actually branch depending on your choices, so I don't think I've really run into that situation too often.

yes... I don't know if it's just me but some otome games choices tends to have clearly positive and pessimistic sounds choices and most of the time, if you want to get good ends you just need to pick the more positive choice... which is sometimes too predictable in my opinion... but then again I think it still better than 'place name' choices (mostly at the start of the game) unless it ties to very important scene.

Well...YES! I'm used to saving before making choices; meaningless options just waste my save slots.

Oh my ABSOLUTELY YES!! It gets more and more irritating when they not only don't matter, but also make the situation worse ТТ Sometimes it's really hard to read the context and protag's intentions and it just makes me save and go back to previous load to reread the scene ╥﹏╥

对我来说,选项对结局有无作用不重要,但对后续剧情变化要有作用,如果选哪个都一样的话,那选项毫无意义(≖_≖ )每见到一个选项我都要认真思考选哪个以免进入坏结局

For me, it doesn't matter whether the options have an impact on the ending or not, but they should have an impact on the subsequent plot changes. If choosing either one is the same, then the options are meaningless(≖_≖ ) Every time I see an option, I have to carefully consider which one to choose in order to avoid entering a bad ending

It affects me every time I make a choice, but I don't think it's necessarily good. There's a game called Detroit Become Human, not an Otome game, and it's definitely a well-made game, but every time I make a choice, it immediately affects the progress, making me do it all over again dozens of times. After having this experience, I thought sometimes it's necessary to just walk by meaninglessly, like just taking a break.

Another one inclined to say no, since after going through titles where different choices would complete change a characters personality and background I'd rather a game stay consistent on whatever story it was tring to tell even if that means the options mainly function as a different type of flavortext

i find it a little bit annoying but for me everything depends on how good story or game itself. i think i will notice this more if vn is not that great. sometimes games need a bunch of useless choices for few new lines xd

This only bothers me in games that are promoted as really branching, a "all of your choices matter" type of marketing. But this happens a lot more on other types of games. In visual novels with choices, not every one of them has to matter a lot, or even have written consequences (outside of guiding you to a specific ending) I think that's normal since it's the case in a lot them so it really doesn't bother me. And I also don't have a preference in relation to this, it really depends on the story itself and on the writing. Games with choices that matter usually have better writing in order to execute this, but there are also a lot of VNs with no choices that have amazing writing as well.

When playing games, I feel incredibly disappointed if my choices don't ultimately change the ending. It's truly frustrating. It makes me feel like my investment and emotions haven't been rewarded, especially in otome games where I'm hoping to influence character relationships and plot development through my choices.

Icks me bad because what do you mean all choices led to the same thing 🧍 I might as well be playing kinetic visual novels, yknow?? Also it diminishes the replayability value for me

Personally, I am very disappointed if the bad endings are generic, if there is no CCG, or if the endings are very similar to each other. I like drama and tension and seeing how your decisions really affect the outcome. I have enjoyed things by reminding myself that I am only going to read, like Sympathy Kiss, and I think that kind of positive, comfy game are necessary, but in darker otome games, it really bothers me.

I actually don't mind it as much as I used to -- I've started to view otomes as sort of a fixed narrative you can choose to pursue the "branches", but the choices themselves are superfluous and only exist to get you to where you wanna go vs actually affecting the narrative meaningfully. When I was younger and really into choice based games outside of otome it would irk me, but I think viewing it as a "choose your own adventure" book has helped me get past some of the annoyance. Still, games were choices DO matter significantly (Detroit: Become Human and it's massive flowchart comes to mind) are a guilty pleasure alongside my otomes.

more or less i guess it depends but i do find it kinda funny sometimes like when a completely harmless choice suddenly leads to a bad ending like how did my li die just bc i chose to eat a strawberry ice cream instead of a chocolate milkshake that kind of logic always makes me laugh
