I think it's more enjoyable when they have a set personality. It can make the story more interesting, as long as their decisions have an impact on the story itself. Or, if they have no personality, then it can be interesting to watch them develop a personality (like Cardia from Code Realize).

I like both, but BL games tend to go into darker topics. If the characters are compelling and the story is interesting, I don't mind. Some (not all) otome games can hold back on themes, and sometimes I wish they would go a bit further. On the other hand, sometimes BL games go waaaay too far. I...

I was also surprised! He's so conflicting, and he made me start rooting for the rasetsu.... which has never happened before. I remember originally playing the psp hakuoki and wondering if he was originally supposed to be a LI? Pleasantly surprised to see him added with a fully fleshed out story.
