I just had the incredible luck of playing two games in a row that have characters that were dead all along and I had to let them go to the other side and move on.

Now on my emotionally destroyed state of mind I want to know whats the general consensus about doomed romance in otome games, where no matter how hard you try, you and the Li will never be able live happily ever after

Personally, I believe that sometimes it can make the character growth and overall plot better, but man, when your favourite character is the one with the doomed romance it stings so bad. Being happily married with everyone but the guy I love the most sucks T-T

So I guess my enjoyment of it depends of which character is the one with the doomed relationship

ohh... I'm not sure i can handle it. It breaks my heart. I rarely play games like this. Curently playing Magical Deathpair ( otome-jrpg)and not sure what will happen next.. I can't forse finish 2nd chapter. My poor baby G

I've played a few and for me, as long as I have my moments with the LI, I can withstand it although the ending will break my heart (╥﹏╥)

I once played a game, and at that time I had never played a game that only had bad endings. No matter how many times I went back to the beginning of the game, I couldn't achieve a happy ending with the characters. The inevitably tragic ending made the fleeting moments of happiness in the middle even more sorrowful and unforgettable.

I think when a doomed romance is done well, it can make even characters I wasn't that invested in feel a lot more meaningful, and I really appreciate that. But when that kind of doomed romance happens to my favorite character, it honestly breaks my heart and feels almost unbearable. T-T

I am fine if there are hints of the LIs death prior or throughout the game like with Okita from Hakuouki it hurts but at least I was prepared for the doom. On the other hand I dislike when the LI just suddenly dies at the end or purposefully misled (I am looking at you Toa).

I feel it would be interesting to experience a story like this occasionally, but only occasionally.

It's fun until it's your fav LI and they got no actually happy ending... It ends up feeling so unsatisfying.

Such stories often break my heart, so I seldom play such games.

Especially when the character I like gets a tragic ending, I can't accept it in my heart.

I used the translator.I hope I didn't make a mistake.

Oh! May I ask which games you played that had dead characters?

Personally, I don't mind it! I'm a fan of bittersweet stories and romance. Getting over heartbreak and/or grieving over someone is a journey of growth. In my opinion, it sets up for a good storyline to read characters learning to overcome their pasts/trauma and learning acceptance.

even though i would say i'm not a fan , that type/kind of story does end up hitting me the most ° i would definitely remember them (either for the good or the bad)

The older I get, the more I enjoy this kind of depiction of love... I don't know why, but actually seeing the struggle the characters have to go through chasing something that's impossible really resonates with me.

I'm the type of player who only goes for happy endings in otome games. I don't do bad endings, if a game forces one on me, I'll just pass. For me, gaming is all about joy, relaxation, and those sweet moments with the characters I love.

I'm a soft-hearted person. Even rejecting a character I like is hard enough, so I definitely can't stand seeing him suffer. If I'm suddenly hit with a tragic ending without warning, I'll probably hold a grudge forever. And because of some 'memorable' past experiences, I usually double-check beforehand to make sure a game has a proper ending.

That said, I don't only play fluffy games. I'm fine with drama and angst along the way, as long as it leads to a truly happy ending.

I'm not really into tragic love stories.

I still think happy endings are the best for otome games.

hmmmm it's a bit difficult to answer this, I personally am someone who doesn't mind doomed romance in an otome game, it's just that for me it has to feel reasonable and not forced to be tragic for some reason.

i love me some angst so i do like doomed romance, but i also hope for them to somehow have a happy ending at least even in an au </3. i think it's nice to play through them occasionally but i'd definitely play another otoge that's happier (with no hint of doom) afterwards to cope lol

I enjoy otome game with bad ending, it made me realized that there's many possibility in making choice, even realizing the world is not bubbly like a fairy tale from the perpective of game. :'(

I really like tragedy, so I would be fine with this if the whole story was intended to be a tragedy from the start, and the themes revolve around that. I wouldn't like it if it was just forced to end badly - the best tragedies are the ones that are actually set up and make sense, rather than being needlessly edgy and grim just for the sake of it. When it's the point and properly executed, it still feels somehow satisfying (because the themes still get fulfilled, even if these are tragic), instead of like I was just snubbed by the narrative and forced to contend with an ending that just feels mean-spirited. I feel like in general, the doomed romances aren't actually doomed at the end and the story is about fighting against that fate, which I do generally feel is more satisfying and cathartic. However, actual tragedies can be good too, like I said, if done well.

I do enjoy doomed romance.
Ultimately, most of these characters are not immortal.. so eventually one will probably die before the other.. or they'll fall out of love before they die.. so isn't all romance doomed? Just a matter of ending sooner (during the game) or later (after the game).

Oh I can think of routes/games like this....as long as the writing is good, Im fine with it!
The bitter sweet and the pain is the charm of it imo. Not every game has to be merry.
There's also the option of headcanoning a different ending or alternative development lmao! I do this sometimes haha.
