I'm looking for people to talk about the LuckyDog1 series (r18 bl)

I'm not sure if they'll ever make another mainline game but I do definitely believe they will continue to release content in relation to lucky dog such as new merch, event's within Japan (like themed cafes and art exhibitions), the new stage play which they released info for recently and perhaps new animations, audio dramas or doujins which the company is also known for (as per their 2 most recent releases, gargantua and brother play (ani asobi)). If they do make more game content I wouldn't be surprised if it follows the format of some of the fan disks released rather than a full length title like bad egg.

As far as I know there has been no official news regarding any further games, their twitter is mainly advertising the new lucky dog screenplay and ani asobi but they also post milestones for game sales and news of when new merch is up on their booth. They seem to be more frequent posters on Twitter than their actual official website so that's what I would probably keep an eye on 😂.

Lucky dog is their most popular ip by far along with some of their Otome releases under their parent company so I wouldn't say its not a possibility that we will get a future game or even a remake of the original but unfortunately at this time all we can do is look and listen out (especially since ani asobi only just released as you said plus they released the English version for friendly lab last year and ported bad egg to iOS the year before). I loved freindly lab so I wouldn't mind if they wanted to create new ips also but most companies won't dump a milk cow and I think lucky dog is a big addition to their revenue!

im just delulu so i want another main game, i just cant get enough of it haha
but even a fan disk would be amazing !!! i would be so happy too
but it depends on what kind of fandisk. If its like Gians Lucky happy life then its great ! but the other spin offs arent very good (except a few scenes, but its always good to have new official cgs)
my ranking for the spin offs is this :
Gians Lucky happy life - mr.giancarlo the boss (but the art is the worst) - rakido mania (its a VERY hard quiz game) - Gian no tame (tho the mini game itself is way funnier than rakido mania)
i dont count secret diary as a spin off, its more like an addition to the og game so its in between main game and fandisk

a remake of the original LD1 game would be interesting tho !! i would love to see the same cgs with yuras new art !! (but we would probably need to say goodbye to that tree.png and to the powerpoint transitions haha)
speaking of the og game, i really think some scenes lacked cgs. In the switch ver they did some cgs for some of these scenes (instead of the H scene cgs yk) but some still were lacking. Like, i was waiting so bad for that Luchino cg where he and Gian have their foreheads together and he tells him he'll make him into a fabulous boss. THIS is peak CG moment, and they still didnt give us one??? c'mon!
and some cgs during big moments of actions would have been nice too

Tennenouji has a parent company? It's been my understanding this entire time that they're a doujin group (in fact, they're still described that way in wiki/vndb). Yura has done corporate work, but LD1 series is doujin even though it's much more popular and genre-changing than many company works. Yura has illustrated for otome games under Enterbrain and Hunex, but that's unrelated to her work for LD1 IIRC.

BL games have a very high rate of bangers released from indie groups imo which I love. Adelta's also an indie group and I'd say they have the most amazing batting average of any VN creator in the last ten years! I think it's part of why the genre often tackles more novel themes and often feel risk-taking, indies are not making BL games for money and having to go through the corporate process, they do it because they want to.

I think the only corporate BL devs left with a consistent output are Holicworks and N+C. Pil/Slash hasn't made anything in a while and I think their parent company is also not doing great? Karin's latest game was a bromance for the Switch and it bombed IIRC. Spray used to be big, but changing trends have left them by the wayside (which is a shame because Gakuen Heaven 2 was legit a good game and great for introducing newcomers to the genre).

I would love an LD1 sequel but Bad Egg's development was apparently hell and I'm not sure they want to do it again. When they started making LD1, they probably didn't expect it'd become one of THE pillars of the genre lol. It makes any followup a tough act to follow. I sure hope they do more traditional style VNs with focus on fun adventures though....I like Friendly Lab, but Ani Asobi was like....okay, not what I expected from you, Tennenouji.

LD1 remaster would be lovely though ngl. I don't even need new art, old art in higher resolution and the modern JP understand that PCs aren't weaker than consoles would be great. Reading text in the old games hurt my old person eyes lol.

from what i understood it was hell because the main scenarist had family problems he had to take care of (a sick mother i think? unsure) so thats one of the reasons the game got delayed so much. Also, they cut some scenes that were supposed to be in the game, so i guess they also did many changes to the scenario
if im honest to myself id say that indeed a new sequel is unlikely... but im dreaming of it!! and some bad egg endings opened room for more content

Being deliusional is half the fun! its how I feel waiting for any new games or english translations, like make my yaoi drams come true japan! Yeah I would rather a fan disk follow a more visual novel format then minigames or quizes since its hard to translate shit quickly so I have zero idea whats going on half the time XD.

I would love a remake of the original game new art or no but I would want my tree.png kept intact! When I initualy played the original I didnt feel like it lacked cgs but bad egg has absolutely spoiled us with heaps of cinamatic drawings of just general happenings which I think would be a fun incorporation into the original if it was ever updated (like yes bad egg I definitly needed to see Gian ruffling Walters hair and teshikagas birds thank youuuuu!) The only other game I can think of with that many CGs for just general scenes outside of the romance is Ooe and all of them are SUPER EFFECTIVE and conveying the scenes overall "vibe" be it tension or calm. At the very least if no art exists for what i want to see yet its a good fan art moment, there have been heaps of stupid gian moments ive been tempted to doodle XD.

I thought they had a parent companey? I legit might be thinking of like a side branch or something tho, i only follow their main twitter since its the most active thing they have going XD. Yeah I knew about Yura's other works! Shes been around since early visual novel days ands always a treat to see her name listed since one of the first BL games I played was enzai (weird place to start, everyone ive talked to has like DMMD as their gateway but for me it was togainu no chi and the old school prison game!)

Yeah Adelta to me has the highest consistency of fantastic work! each game they release seems to get better each time and ooe has jumped to like my favourite along with shingakkou, Its a beautiful story with characters that are flawed in a situation that is awful and I love it to peices! I prefer BL for the entire reason that half the time the plots are something I would lean more towards in general novels and games also, ive always found horror, crime and other dark themes more engaging and I love exploring those themes in fictional mediums. Pair that with BL protaganists being some of the most fun and well rounded in the genre so you get a super engaging story told from the perspective of someone equally as engaging!

I think the only corporate BL devs left with a consistent output are Holicworks and N+C. Pil/Slash hasn't made anything in a while and I think their parent company is also not doing great? I agree with that consistency list, I love most of pil / slash works even some of the more... questionable releases, but I wasnt a huge fan of dystopia no ou despite liking the protaganist and pigion blood was annoying enough for me to drop despite wanting to return and fininsh it. I would say parade has released some good games but those ones I wouldnt recomend haphazardly just because even within the genre their stories are DARK but I definitely enjoyed lesson which they released late last year. Its good to see that new releases are still kinda poping up tho, like Haiiro no arcadia last year along with a few western releases! I also imagine that a few companies with sucsessful debut games may eventualy come back on the scene with new content like the creaters of Nie no machi (town of nie) or Mahoutsukai to Tenshi to Akuma (sorceres choice) but you can never really know, just hope! And omg gakuen heaven! not a game you hear much about nowdays but it used to be a staple!

maybe you mean that some of their recent games were developped with other companies ? like WoGa (for bad egg for ex) and Prototype (switch ver)

indeed, my gateway was dmmd haha but i mean in 2012 it was everywhere on the internet and you heard about it whether you were into BL or not
then i did dmmd re, and my second series was togainu no chi

are ooe and shingakkou doujin games too then?

Yeah that's probably right. I might have been thinking of other companies too, a lot of BL visual novel companies are branches of bigger companies that also make other genres of visual novels (usually Otome, Bishoujo, or just straight up smut (looking at you parade / clockup!) .

Dmmd is a common gateway and not a bad one! Definitely more of a chill welcome to the genre than Enzai and togainu no chi, though at that point I was well used to BL tropes from manga. I was actually quite late to Dmmd all things considered, I think my general order was Enzai, togainu no chi, lamento, sweet pool, lucky dog and THEN dmmd😂 (some of those middle ones probably have slightly off ordering but I used to watch someone on YouTube who would translate these games before their was much monetisation or find translations on tumblr/ old forums!) I didn't start branching out to new companies until fairly recently surprisingly, I got back into visual novels a few years ago after I played hashihime and have absolutely smashed out quite a few now in between like study and work!

And nope not doujin games, just general visual novels! Ooe is made by Adela which I think started out as a solo dev that has expanded out now and shingakkou is pil / slash but I believe it had a different writer than most of their other games (which might explain why it's the most peak of their games😂) I actually think shingakkou has a few "official" manga works tho, I should actually check that, they might be fun to read🧐

Adelta still considers themselves a doujin circle, in the very classical sense (granted, the line between 'doujin circle' and 'indie dev' in Japan is very thin).

You can see how they still describe themselves on their site even now. "Doujin" doesn't mean the same thing in JP as EN thinks it does, though. Like the entire Higurashi and Umineko series are doujin games, as commercialized as both properties have been, and 7th Expansion still describes itself as a doujin circle. It just means they're not being made by an incorporated company, it doesn't mean anything else.

Shingakkou is Pil/Slash which is a proper company with an eroge company as the parent, the writer is the same writer as Bara no Ki ni Bara no Hanasaku, which is a classic gothic BL game. The writer is known for being really good at writing gothic/tanbi-esque character focused BL games, and I wish she'd write more lol. Writer used to work for Cyc.

Also, embarrassingly enough, I started on Kichiku Megane lol. I was stressed and just wanted to play something ridiculous and the JP seemed easy to me at the time. I didn't even think I'd enjoy BL games....

My starting order was :
dmmd - dmmd re - togainu no chi - sweet pool - lamento (last of the N+C games because it was the only one not fully translated at the time) - pigeon blood
then nothing for a decade
and then in november i started LD1 and galtia i think at the same time ? and my obsession for LD1 made me want to play other VNs

when i played dmmd because there was some hype i was actually reluctant and didnt think i would like it/i would want to play other games from the company. I knew that the scenario wasnt good but what made dmmd popular were actually the characters and their designs ! to this day i still think they really stand out and some are just simply great. And except clear theres no dmmd character who looks like a character youve seen before in a yaoi or in an anime in general. they are sooo recognizable and unique

A learning experience! I always associated "doujin" games as ones defined as kinda not for profit kinda like the old school printed fan works format! Though it makes sense that "passion" works kinda fall under the same umbrella and are still considered doujin games!

the writer is the same writer as Bara no Ki ni Bara no Hanasaku, which is a classic gothic BL game.

Bara no ki ni bara no hanasaku is a game I started explicitly because it had the same writer as shingakkou! I didn't finish it because of a few other things dragging my attention away at the time and now I'm kinda waiting to forget enough of the story to warrant replaying what I did end up getting through 😂. Kichiku megane is also certainly a place to start! I definitely knew I would like BL games but I only recently kinda bothered to touch untranslated titles. My Japanese is beyond ass but technology has improved so reading them actually hasn't been all that difficult! One day hopefully my Japanese will be good enough to play them naturally but for that to happen I would actually need to sink time into studying it properly 😂

I also had a huge gap of kinda not consuming standard BL visual novels, I still played visual novels for sure but a lot of ones where gameplay is kinda incorporated! (Ace attorney, danganronpa, and a LOT of horror titels!) I was more so in fandom spaces at that time so a lot of shipping, zines and fanworks so my love of BL has certainly survived but since I've gotten older I've kinda phased back into enjoying the solo experience and story focus of visual novels! (And then of course comes the dilemma of now wanting to talk about what I've read when no one knows what the fuck half these games are 😂)

Yeah Dmmd used to be a hot topic! I think perhaps the unique setting/ art, shock factor of some of the bad endings plus general online culture at the time was a perfect breeding ground for it to kinda gain traction! I'm seeing the same semi happen with slow damage but that game is way less marketable to large audiences just because of the darker subject matters. I still think Dmmd has some of the most beautiful character designs. I love clear but I agree he is the most standard but I think it's the full picture of the gas mask and the umbrella that creates that gap moe which is still super iconic 😂. Same with noiz being the grumpiest thing ever but having bunnies as his motifs and mink being an ass but loving pink! Koujaku is just beautiful and Aoba can't dress himself and goes to bed in jeans like a monster but I respect that for him!

It's interesting to hear about what games got people into or back into the genre! Like lucky dog dragging you back into the fold after years! It's a good game so I don't blame you, some games just tick every box.

Thank you for that input!
You said you dont play blvns anymore, but do you still play some vns in general? Or did you stop with vns as a whole?
I'm so sorry for replying so late!!! I used to be a huge fujo so i've played almost every BLvn i could find, but despite playing so many only a couple of them i actually liked. I'm not really a fujo anymore, so i've been thinking about playing some otome vns, but i can't stand the character designs in them, so i'll probably try to find some other vns to read from other genres

a vn id like to play is the umineko series. But i know its veeeeery long haha
i cant read japanese so im using an app to hook and translate the text, its LunaTranslator and it works wonders !! i wouldnt have been able to play bad egg without it

oh yeah for clear i was talking about his true appearance, but indeed the gas mask and umbrella were very unique ! and the apron WITH the gas mask on! Btw that cg really went viral at the time, thats probably the first dmmd cg i ever saw. Fun fact, in my country a famous online magazine for women made an article about dmmd and they used this cg to talk about the game, so clears bare ass with an apron and gas mask on kinda fell into mainstream media haha
and yeah i also remember seeing some bad end cgs. I think the noiz one was shared a lot, and yeah it makes you wonder how that happened. The more i think about it the more dmmd was a very smart game commercially wise
And the characters having alt styles was so cool. Like, Noiz having soooo many piercings ! btw i love that character he is my fave
aoba is a fashion disaster indeed. Man just wears the skinniest jeans to have ever jeans and still manages to fight people throwing his legs on their faces, incredible

Umineko is Fantastic but yes it's certainly a time sink, all of higarashi's chapters plus uminsko took me probably over 200 hours to finish😭. If your interested in horror VN's and want to test the waters with some shorter titles the house of Fata Morgana is also very good as is NG from the death mark series, song of Saya and raging loop perhaps!

I used to use textractor but I found just straight up translating from the google translate camera app gave more "whole" sentences more frequently so I just use my iPad to scan the text now! (especially since I know only basic Japanese and start dying once they use anything beyond grade 1 kanji which unfortunately every visual novel does😂)

YEP THAT CLEAR CG IS ICONIC, amazing that it made it into a magazine though to be fair it would have certainly gotten my attention 😂. That noiz bad ending was a meme on tumblr for a while I believe so I saw a lot of them bloodied up along with audio of aobas "iiyo~" in koujakus route and THAT FUCKEN AOBA CAKE THAT PEOPLE STILL MAKE!

My favourites are clear and koujaku but I would say noiz is certainly up there with poor mink and Rei bringing up the rear (I'm sorry Rei you are so fucken forgettable to the point I actually prefer mink 😂)

And omg Aobas fucken round house kicks which he throws INDISCRIMINATELY in his tight ass jeans! It's even funnier because in every n+c event where they draw the characters in new clothes AOBA STAYS AS A FASHION DISASTER! In a few figures he dresses well so he can do it he just doesn't! I don't know why his granny lets him leave the house😂.

I don't know why his granny lets him leave the house😂.
i played saya no uta when i was 14-15 (my first VN actually, before dmmd). The story and environment are very good (lets NOT talk about the r18 p3d0 scenes)

you should try lunatranslator, you just have to download it, you chose which era should be translated and hop it works and translates your game ! its amazing

i remember the iiyo!! even 10 years later haha
i didnt remember the aoba cake so i googled it, and oomg yeah now i remember... what a time

clear was very cute ! i wasnt a fan of his pairing with aoba, idk why tbh, just didnt clock with me
koujaku is my second fave ! he has many cute scenes with aoba, and in reconnect he is so respectful ! aoba+koujaku is my fav couple i think, even if i prefer noiz as a character (noiz+aoba is close second tho)
mink was very nice in reconnect from what i remember. And his new design was great
the dog... will forever stay the dog for me
when i played dmmd my fav character was actually aoba tho. I still like him, but years later the one who stayed more in my memory is Noiz!

speaking of LD1 again, what do you think is Ivans sexual orientation? yes random question i know haha
Im wondering because for the others its more obvious
Like, Giulio is for sure gay (even if he wasnt obsessed with Gian). Bernardo is a confirmed bi. Bakshi... is most likely gay, considering that Gian is the first person he tried to kiss and that he was more excited with him than with women.
Luchino is... pansexual? or at least he never cared about Gians gender that much, even if he only goes with women.
Gian is either bi or gay, but homoromantic for sure id say.
but what about Ivan? He never admitted it to himself when he was in a relationship with Gian. Theres also several times where Ivan is "disgusted" by Gians body parts that werent "feminine enough" to his liking. BUt also, his former pal betraying him seemed to have been quite traumatic to him, it almost sounded like a betrayal from a lover.
Is he bi ? """straight""" but biromantic ? or gay but very very closeted ? lmk what you guys think
but maybe im trying to make sense from something that isnt suppoed to make sense

hey! do you mean you want to play the switch version of the game ? or the original pc game in japanese ?
i think both can be found on here tbh but i think theres a bug nowadays where new members like us can't see the download forum subjects...
but anyways yes i would 100% recommend ! i'd advise to play the pc version because the switch version is a version of the pc game but without some scenes (even if a few are added) so theres less content. It's the H scenes that were cut off, but theres some character development in them that were then cut off as well which is a shame imo
OMG Thank you for the info!!! :D Yeah I've had this account for a few years now & I mainly planned to be a lurker but that backfired ;-; I've been trying to find games off here for a hot minute lol but now I know its best to look for PC versions of Luckydog1, Hiyoku no Tori, Taishou Mebiusline and flippin Enzai lol... ahhhh wish me luck in procuring all the games of my dreams

I played the censored steam version of saya no uta when it first came out (I actually didn't know it was an r18 game at all back then😂) but to me horror of that title didnt feel like it was missing anything from the version I played so I'm content with leaving my experience of it as is! I enjoyed the aspect of horror of not being able to differentiate visual stimulus from old perceptions of reality! Like reverse body horror!

Iiyo lives within us all and I'm glad I was able to share the beauty of Aoba cake once again! It's part of the ancient texts!

Yeah my favourite couple were koujaku, clear and noiz in that order! I love Aoba but I'm not sure where to place him on the favourites list, probably on par with koujaku slightly bellow clear! And yeah Rei's entire story was wack but it was amusing enough to read and try and explain to people 😂

I think Ivan is perhaps begrudgingly bi! Like he's canonically had experiences with women and was a pimp as part of his duties to the mafia but he was quick enough to jump Gian in a way that can't just be explained away as "horny" after the prison break. Like if he just wanted a bj sure, more straight, but RETURNING THE FAVOUR? Man was into it whether he wants to admit it or not 😂.

As part of their romance I kinda see some of Ivan's resistance as general banter, showing dominance or just general old school masculinity rearing its head more so then any real disgust at having a male partner. Especially since Ivan was quite content to spend his life with Gian.

I see Ivan as kinda a tsundere and while on the bi spectrum I do think he would probably lean towards women more generally though I don't think that diminishes his relationship with Gian just because of how he started to let himself rely on Gian in the later stages of their story. He is the type of guy that would of probably been anal at showing love even with a woman because he seems like the type to see showing venerability as a weakness and failing as a man (he's paranoid, wants to be on top, is insecure in his position as newest boss, hesitates to show kindness despite being generally kind (cavallis granddaughter) ect!)

Mostly I see him as a young man who fell in love with someone he normally wouldn't have considered all the while coming to terms with the aspects of his personality listed above! He also initially saw Gian as his rival so the change from "I wanna win! 😡" To "I wanna kiss?😳" was probably a system shock to the poor thing!

Stop saying Ivan is straight, he's gay but in the closet. Maybe he's just doing it so he won't get bothered, since the year this video game represents is the 1920s.
Just check if the character is gay in this wiki also has entries for anime if you didn't know.

Here's one of Mr. Giancarlo's screenshots that proves it; they're quite funny.

There should be a thread for funny and hot screenshots from BL games; it definitely won't be as boring as the ones your post your husbando from otome games.

Oh and by the way, talk to me in my messages too, I'm also interested in talking about yaoi games here.

Huh! I definitely would have thought he was bi based on how he's presented in the original game! (Being a pimp, mentioning he's escapades with women, his general attitude with Gian in the beginning ect! I actually thought they were all bi / bi adjacent except Giulio)

I have yet to play Mr Giancarlo since I'm still slowly getting through bad egg but those screenshots make it look interesting so I'll be sure to pick it up after bad egg! It's a bunch of short side stories set after the original game yeah? It'll at the very least make for fun flavour text adding to the characters backgrounds and the such!

My taste in lads is kinda equal between BL and Otome! I usually always like the happy go lucky characters, I tend to play WAY more BL than Otome tho so a lot more of my favourites are reflected from that genre! Gian from lucky dog, Azuma from paradise, Tamamori from hashihime, Takeshiba from Ooe, and August and Neil from shingakkou all have some hysterical moments and are probably who come to mind first when I think of my favourite characters from visual novels!

If you haven't seen it already I would check out the thread started by @ishibashi called the general BL discussion thread, I imagine that one will pick up in time regarding general chats on all BL topics and games regardless how much we derailed this chat meant to be about lucky dog😂. Apologies if you felt a bit ignored here! I've been nervous about butting into chats between other users when I haven't been directly quoted I'm more used to discord servers than forums 😂

i agree to almsot everything you said! i do think the woman who ivan is the closest to considering her as a partner is Rosalia, but shes too young for him (at least when the story takes place) so its hard to say whether he couldve considered her as a life long romantic partner or not. This and his physical attraction to women makes me think he is bi, but him being gay also makes sense.

Btw i thought that the last H scene would be ivan being bottom. I wouldve liked that, but its true that ivan wanting to top all the time is part of his way to reassure himself.
I also thought that Gian would maybe top Giulio (i know it doiesnt happen in BLVNs because the protagonist is almost always bottom, but we did see gian being on top in the prison so i thought it could maybe happen).

i put straight in a lot of """" because that man is obv not straight, but i didnt know how to render the fact that he manifested disgust while also wanting gian. Ty for this link! according to it everyone is bi except giulio and ivan who are gay. Ivan being very closeted and late blooming gay also makes sense imo! i wouldnt be surprised if his former "pal" was also more than that for him subconsciously, considering how it affected him
