I'm actually fighting lol to get a bl buy group on A-S. I already have a group, but I'm willing to help buy some things on A-S as well, to create a more comprehensive list of BL PC games
Dramatical Murder is probably the second tamest game in Nitro+Chiral's ouverve imo.
You want to see N+C going hard, try Sweet Pool.
(Funny thing about that game: the main artist at the time of her being recruited was in the Sentou Yousei Yukikaze fandom and drawing doujins for it, so the art of the game looks a lot like the character designs of that anime, with a few characters who are dead ringers for that anime's characters. And now I can't ever rewatch Yukikaze with a straight face.)
I played all nitrochiral games back in 2013, except Slow damage because it didnt exist
What would be your "tame ranking" for the n+c games ?
I did play sweet pool but tbh it was the game i liked the least, probably because there was no pairing or character i really liked, except that man who was monitoring that crazy Zenya dude (I think that his name, he had long hair) but he was a side character so....
I have a clear memory of the n+c games except for sweet pool, but i do remember some scenes and that the whole vibe was horrific.
Also, i think i would differenciate games like sweet pool whose overall vibe was horrific and the bad endings of some more "happy" games that were very terrific imo
I think my overall "tame ranking" would be, from worst to "tamest" :
DMMD reconnect - togainu no chi - sweet pool - lamento - dmmd
I do put dmmd reconnect in the "worst" because you have a continuation of the og game bad endings and it was truly a terrible watch. Dont get me started on the
virus and trip, and clear
bad end, not even talking about the g0re or b3stiality of some bad ends
Also, i put lamento low on the list but just for the existence of the
froud in rais route
bad end this is def not tame, this end is one of the most terrible ones of all n+c games imo. Would NEVER play it again
Togainu is high on the list because a lot of terrible things happen in the Keisuke and shiki routes.
For dmmd the vibe is overall colorful, and from what i remember the bad ends arent that detailed, but maybe i have selective memory
Sweet Pool > DMMD Reconnect > Togainu no Chi > DMMD > Lamento
Sweet Pool because frankly not a single good thing happened in that game lol. *Everything* is terrible and horrible and if you don't have the stomach for gore or cannibalism or noncon you wouldn't be able to play it at all. Individual scenes in it might be surpassed elsewhere, but the overall package is pretty much textbook extreme content. I actually liked what it tries to portray about love but I don't think the characters were too likable either.
DMMD Reconnect because I agree with you.
Togainu no Chi has some pretty hardcore things going on in it in its attempt to portray an awful underworld where sex slavery is pretty much par for course, and lol the legendary screwdriver. However, the final tone of it is pretty hopeful and you do have more....*normal* routes, for whatever it's worth.
DMMD is made for a more general audience and so it doesn't really have a ton of extreme content in it. I did find the overall tone to be edgier so there's that.
Lamento....does have that ending, lol, but maybe I'm desensitized to that sort of thing thanks to *all the stuff in other games* and it didn't really hit me that hard. I think the entire game kicks at emotions the hardest of N+C games that I've played (I still haven't done Slow Damage since at the time of release I found the premise unappealing thanks to various trends) but overall it's the closest thing N+C ever did to a non-edgy non-extreme regular romance game.
I think I put less emphasis on 'the worst thing that happens in the game' and more of 'the amount of questionable stuff that happens in the game', I guess...?
I started playing galtia because i remember reading a synopsis back in 2014 and finding it interesting, and also i liked the sprites of the characters. The game wasnt even out yet, it was like, just being annonced and with a few previews or something? And fun fact, a few months ago i randomly remembered wanting to play this game more than a decade ago so i started looking for it online, and thats when i found LuckyDog1 lol. So its the game that made me discover LD1 kinda.
I started Galtia without knowing much about it but then i heard mixed reviews about this game, and theres apparently some routes that are just stockholm syndrome stuff so it doesnt hype me. I still want to do at least a few routes, for the sake of having waited more than 10 years to play it, yk? Im at the... beginning? middle? (i honeslty have no clue) of the childhood friend route, for now nothing really major happened, it still felt like i was on the "preview" part of the game
Well yeah, i remember that scene in pigeon blood. I stopped the game after that too... but i calmed down and started the game again a few days later i think after deciding ill do at least one route, but honestly i wouldve been better not continuing
"the most well known BL visual novel is dramatical murder and that one is seen as tame within the genre…"
wait is dramatical murder actually considered tamed ??? I remember some very unsettling bad endings so if THIS is tame then damn
Omg so playing it has been a long time coming! I think the only game that's been on my radar that long was slow damage since I was waiting for that shit to come out since the first teaser! Regardless hopefully the game picks up for you soon, a story dragging is definitely not entertaining . If nothing else it let you discover a game you liked so you can tip your hat to it in passing!
I'm weirdly more curious to play pigeon blood now despite knowing I'm gonna despise every second. I just wanna see HOW BAD you know? It was such a difficult game for me to get a hold of as well, like pil/ slash had hidden it out of shame.
And yeah Dmmd is considered tame for a BL game since only really the endings are dark! (At least I've seen that talking point being made and I do mainly agree with it) In comparison to games made by other companies such as pil/ slash, parade and even other nitro plus games it's got way less dark shit going on (Tho mink is definitely a warning). But yeah I think I can count on one hand the amount of visual novels I've played that are 100% chill and I think they are mostly western releases .
Sweet Pool > DMMD Reconnect > Togainu no Chi > DMMD > Lamento

Then i agree that sweet pool should be first or second on the list, if theres all that (i honestly dont remember much about it, but i do credit this game for adding "osu" and "mesu" to my japanese vocabulary)
Since i dont remember it 10ish years later i guess it means i wasnt traumatized, but on the contrary i do remember quite clearly some of the DMMD Reconnect bad endings.
Its true that for Lamento i dont remember many traumatic moments except that one i talked about, so i guess i would change my ranking and put lamento last on the list because dmmd had mink + the bad ends that were nightmare material.
For Lamento i also agree for the feelings, some moments made me tearful
To talk about LD1 again, how would you place it on the list with N+C games "tame" wise?
for me its def tamer than dmmdre and now i think than sweet pool too. Id place it on par with Togainu and dmmd

to be fair it wasnt like ive been wanting to play it for a decade, its just that i wanted to play it back in 2014 but then i got busy and completely forgot about it for 10 years, and then it popped in my memory again haha but yeah at least me remembering this game and looking for it because i was bored coincided with the release of the LD1 english patch so im not complaining ! thank you galtia for allowing me to know about giancarlo
well i didnt mean to advertise that game but if you do play it again you can lmk so we can bitch about it

I think LD1 is pretty tame...? You get some violence, and some implications of awful things happening in the foreground, but the general story is pretty positive and the relationships rather bright. I'd say def tamer than Togainu (which gets a lot more in your face about the criminal underground and the violence thereof, meanwhile LD1 still tries to play into the Gentleman Mafia fantasies quite a bit despite having touches with the darker side of it) maybe on par with DMMD.
(Apologies if I'm derailing the conversation!!) Just peeking in here to say that I have also played and enjoyed LD1!! I initially started reading through Terracannon's translation blog for it years ago and was super excited that it finally released officially! I have almost fully finished the game after finally starting it in December.
Bernardo was, and still is upon actually playing it, my favorite, haha. I think I tend to like characters that have his general appearance and personality. Luchino's route actually surprised me as well, I definitely warmed up to him upon playing through it and thought his backstory and relationship with Gian was quite interesting!
I also just really enjoy Gian as an MC; I haven't seen another BL with a main character that quite has his vibe, and I find him a fun character (and also very much enjoy that he is actually a proper character in his own right as I do not generally self-insert when playing VNs.)

haha yeah one of the things that surprised me in LD1 was how many of the capos/higher ranked subordinates of the capos are like... very cute and respectful ? like damn why is that man who is an actual pimp better than 99% of men??

noo youre not derailing at all!!!
def lmk your thoughts once youve finished the game! if im understanding well, you played bernardo and luchinos routes, right ? but not ivan and guilio yet?
for me bernardo was the one i did the route last because i didnt like his design, even though i was very interested in seeing how his relationship with gian would evolve. Then his pairing with gian became my second fav, and its one that imo makes a lot of sense. Like, the couples that for me were bound to organically happen were Luchino+Gian and Bernardo+Gian
Gian is so cool. And for me it makes sense why the whole cast could fall for him because, well, i woulve been interested in him too had i been in the game
Also!! what i love about Gian that i didnt see other yaoi protag have is that he is actually sexually attracted to men/to his lover. In other games i played, Aoba from dmmd was the closest to that, but otherwise the others didnt seem to find their lover attractive or anything (for n+c games at least, because i didnt play other yaoi games so maybe its only in these ? if its actually common in yaoi games to have the mc thirsting over other men pls lmk because im sick of games treating attraction to the same sex as something quite shameful)
I loved Gian telling to himself that this man is attractive/sexy, looking at his body and remembering intimate moments with the envy of it happening again
Also, i love the fact that in the games Gian has/will have the highest position of power among the cast, because it doesnt fit the old "bottom" stereotype

That MC is both sexually active and openly attracted to men. He's got an aversion to romance for Reasons (what's a romance game without something to overcome, anyway?) but he's pretty frank about being into men and wanting the d!
Yes definitely have some western titles to recommend especially if your taste tends to lean more towards fluff within bl more so than some of the more common darker themes seen in Japanese releases! The divine speaker is a pretty good one as well as the majority of other games made by that company such as a date with death and dreambound! (I did have to mute character voices in those games tho, I appreciate that they got voice acting for them and the amount of effort put in but it's so weird for me to hear voice acting in a visual novel in my native language ) killer chat is another more lighthearted western visual novel, and touchstarved has some darker themes but it seems it's going to overall take a more chill approach.
In terms of Japanese releases, the "angel" route of the sorcerers choice is very fluffy and soft as is the majority of the game Tokyo onmyoji (and I see ishibashi has also mentioned this game! So definitely might be within your ballpark!) and both games are also translated to English. If I remember any more I'll add them to the list but since I tend to play more dark games by choice a lot of the softer ones can fly under my radar until I back check what games I've missed in my ever going search for more BL titles to play
Well I definitely know what I'll be attempting to play after I finish bad egg, I'll be glad to have the support in getting through that mess honestly I think I'll enjoy it playing it, in a kinda painful cringe way. Like watching a failed attempt at a handshake

We are the ones derailing it, you're getting it back on track! I believe I also started using that translation years ago as I found it on Aarins fantasy! The official English release of the game from what I've skimmed through has so much charm and energy you can tell how much effort was put into keeping the language fun, engaging and faithful!
I'm also a Bernardo lover (along with my boy luchino of course!) since I thought it was super fun how he interacted with Gian and how their prior friendship made it feel like there was an element of pre established trust between the two that evolved as hidden feelings came to light!
Gian is certainly one of the most unique protagonists within yaoi and that's saying something considering the genre usually already creates pretty self sufficient main characters without some of the "self insert" tropes seen sometimes in Otome. There are certain other main characters that match his freak but less so that match his energy that's for sure. The other BL protagonists I've seen match him in my mind for uniqueness are Azuma from paradise and tamamori from hashihime of the old book town! Both are really fucken dumb with a streak of characters traits that are somewhat negative making them feel a bit more "alive". A lot of my personal favourites for protagonists tho comes down just to preferences tho, I live happy go lucky characters with a passion!

i love darker stories!!! but also i would love to have no ra/pe scenes yk?
i dont know how i would feel about a r18 game with voice acting in my own language... i would maybe cringe too
tysm for the recommendations, ill def add them to my list too. And thanks to you and @ishibashi for tokyo onmyoji, im really hyped if the MC is frank about wanting to have sex with men!
haha okay lmk for pigeon blood, ill dig into my memories to bitch about it

I actually have played all routes besides finishing up Bernardo's actually because I wanted to save it for last, haha. I just haven't gotten back to it but I get right up to near the end! I absolutely agree their pairing makes a ton of sense, especially since they were already pretty close prior to the game and have a lot of history with each other.
I did enjoy pretty much everyone's routes and they all had their interesting points! I found the the bit near the end of Ivan's best end route that indicated that him and Gian were still a loving couple into their older years (though Gian unfortunately passed first it seems ;v; ) really poignant and sweet, and Ivan does have a fun vibe. Giulio's route was...definitely not the smoothest experience at times for the obvious gore and borderline necrophilia reasons (I have played worse to be fair and I avoid actively playing through bad ends in BL games to try to dodge most of it), but I do like him and his design and enjoy his relationship with Gian!
I think everyone had a really satisfying conclusion to their routes in this game, which I very much appreciate! I also agree with everything you mentioned about Gian as a character and was very glad to play a BL game with consensual sex and an MC who has a strong personality and agency!! That obviously is way more commonplace in western BL games, which I have played some of and do appreciate, and I need to get around to playing more of them, and apparently also giving Tokyo Onmyouji a shot considering what @ishibashi mentioned!

Im actually glad i played bernardos route last too, because it was a pleasant surprise, and scenario wise it was one of the best ones imo. he also has cute moments with gian! Im just so sad that the first H scene turned out that way. There was no reason for it to be like that, and also for bernardo to never actually apologize, yk? Also, at that time Gian was actually already attracted to bernardo and wasnt opposed to being his lover (like, he considered it)... i will forever be so mad about this :( Imo the first and second H scene should have been reversed, so that they could still have outdoor sex (because i guess it was the goal of that scene).
Im the same for Ivan, it really breaks my heart every time (but at first I admit i didnt realize the old man was him lol idk why it flew over my head). I do think Gian also stays with his other lovers until the end of their lives, but we only see it for ivan. The only one you could wonder about that was actually with Luchino but bad egg makes it clear for him too. You should def play bad egg after LD1!!! its great
I dont like the pairing of gian with giulio, i think their dynamic is bad. But i love how giulio acts around Gian in the other routes, its cute but not "too much"
I personally just cant bring myself to not play bad ends, im too much of a completionist for that.. and im too curious. Even if i know it will either break my heart or disgust me, or both.
Oooh do you have western BLs youd recommend? im writing down all recommendations!

speaking of bad egg, did you manage to continue ?
I did continue but have yet to hit an ending yet! My boi luchino made another apearance and stuff is geting serious so im excited to continue but i think I underestimated the length of the game XD. I should of known better since I was already over 40 hours and I have an awful habbit of playing a few games at once so I was half playing switch half reading bad egg XD.
Yeah a lot of BL games have non con, for me ill read anything but I prefer if it kinda make sense within the story context for me to be more forgiving with it whereas if the character is just an asshole im usualy more like "bro why". Like in something like room no 9 the entire premise is they are traped as part of an experemint so it is obvious whats going to happen but there is one route in slow damage that was TOUGH for me to get through because it was just brutal and I didnt really like the perpertrating character or understand his motives at all. Like in Enzai and lucky dog its like "ah yes a prison! I am prepared B)" but in some games it can kinda come out of nowhere and im sitting there like "ok wasnt expecting that..." XD. I prefer horror and ive been in the yaoi scene for AGES now so ive learned to just roll with the punches and be prepared for anything but a lot of the games that reach my favourites list usally have a reason to be up there and that means if they contain darker themes they either explain them well or handle them with a bit more class (or are fully f teir quality that my weird ass finds amusing, ill read something crap on purpose just to get a laugh XD).
And yes! once I start up pigion blood ill probably DM privately to vent over it, I absolutly know its gonna make my blood boil and I cant wait to play it! itll be like naked buttlers all over again, that game made me want to bleach my eyes, its probably one of the only games I fully dropped because it was just irrademably bad XD.
I played the OG LD1 and some of the spinoffs but back then I didn't know any Japanese so I was struggling before I started following terracannon's translations. My character ranking would be Gian, Giulio, Bernardo, Luchino, Ivan. I always loved it whenever I heard Giulio say "Gian-san". For the longest time I'd hated Ivan because he was always loud and kind of a jerk, but I know now that's it's also partly because of Gian pushing his buttons lol
I was excited for Bad Egg but I was disappointed about the VA cast change that I haven't touched it yet.
Now that there's an official English release I'm slowly playing through the game again.

If it makes you feel better the new voices are just as good as the original! Gians voice is softer but it suits the more vaunerable moments he gets put into in bad egg plus he retains his snark so he doest feel that different character wise! Luchinos is probably the most noticable difference in voice, a bit deeper in tone but the voice actor is very well practiced from other games and does a very good job. I could hardly tell the difference between Benardo and Ivan honestly and of course Gulio has the same actor. Bakshsi I dont even remember the original voice since he was so minor of a character but his actor in bad egg does a fantastic job of making him fun to listen to!
Hopefuly you give bad egg a chance because I arguably believe it to be a better story experience than the original and thats a high praise considering the original was alredy a great game XD. The english release is a very good translation and im glad that the individual responsible for translating the game on that old blog from years ago got a chance to be involved with the offical release, especally since its such a fun localisation!

i was so hyped when we saw luchino!! and his new sprite, he looks sooo good! yeah you still have a loong way to go
I mean, since i did all n+c games i kind of have to be prepared for non con to happen when i do yaoi VNs, but i still get mad every time. Some games do deal better with it scenario wise indeed, but some really are terrible. Damn im sad to know that for Slow Damage... i mean, idk what i expected but im not surprised since its from n+c, all their games had at least a route when ra/pe happened outside of bad ends (except Lamento maybe? i dont remember)
I know hadaka shitsuji by name, but i didnt know it was terrible. Its famous tho so maybe its famous for being bad then?
ill wait for your pigeon blood private message !
True, i also love Giulios tone when he calls Gian! Ivan always made me laugh and got me interested in seeing him go from full homophobic to being in love with that same guy he is homophobic towards, but in his route i was the same as you, his behavior annoyed me and boy was he loud... TOO LOUD. Like, it wasnt pleasant to my ears, they really did too much of that screaming imo. I had to cut him when he screamed too much
let us know what you think once you finish the game fully translated!! the experience will be so much better i think!
which spinoff did you do?
for bad egg i have the same opinion as @Fishish ! Giulio is the same VA, Bernardos voice hardly makes a difference, Ivan isnt that diferent either (and imo this voice is a little better), Gian s isnt too different too but its a great one too. Luchinos is different and for this character i prefer the og voice (with the higher pitched tone) but the VA is a big name in the industry and his voice suits Luchino too. Bakshi has a very different voice, its the most different one but its 100% better than the og one. In bad egg he is a main character so his voice suits a main character role and the acting is GREAT, thats what surprised me so much when bakshi appeared. The way he speaks is so special, never heard that before.
and the story is soooo good, better than the og game (which was already great!!). Its definetely popular shonen/seinen worthy ! If it wasnt a BL bad egg would be a mainstream anime i think
i was so hyped when we saw luchino!! and his new sprite, he looks sooo good! yeah you still have a loong way to go

Ah ever more game to play, all the bad eggs! At this rate ill be playing the game until easter.
And yeah its not just a n+c trope unfortunately, I think all main companies for BL have games with elements (parade, pil slash, holicworks, adelta). Some games handle them themes way better than others tho. Slow damage is a fantasic game that handles its themes well but it doesnt shy away from brutal and the main characters self distructive tendincies. To me each indivdual route felt like a metaphor for different ways of handling trauma, some more healthy than others. The route I talked about was the worst for me but it was worth it to endure to make it to the final route and true ending. If you made it through mink then youll kinda know what to expect at least but it was certainly a game I had to take a few breaks from.
Lamento had themes of it too, though mainly in bad endings with the demons so a little less blatent perhaps. Lamento might be the most chill n+c game. From most to least chill I would probably rate them Lamento, Dmmd, Togainu no chi, Sweet pool, Slow damage XD.
And yes hadaka shitsuji is TERRIBLE XD. Its kinda feels like a reaction game, like I feel like I made new expressions playing it and all of them conveyed mixes of cringe, disgust, confusion and amusement. Its imposible to describe... I watched a friend play it once, poor thing went in blind and I was able to see those same expressions on another face instead of feeling them on my own. I cant in good conscience ever recomend it but if you ever feel like suffering or watching another suffer than you have your game! Maybe youll make it further than I did XD.

well yeah if you only play a little on weekds then easter sounds correct haha
oh wow slow damage is the least chill compared to other n+c games? ig ill have to be prepared then
i went on vndb to check on hadaka shitsuji and oh my... the tags and the cgs are WILD. I remember seeing that z00philic cg before and telling myself i ll never play this game (didnt remember it was hadaka shitsuji), so i didnt check other cgs but now that ive seen a little more of them i want to wash my eyes... yep im not playing this! If i decided to play that game without knowing about it just because its popular and because i randmly found it (which i did more than once so it could have happened) then it would have been a crazy (unrecommendable) experience

Im geting my speed on! I have all day to play today so im hoping to get somewhere substantual with it, I just have to stop getting distracted with like donky kong XD.
Yeah I would rate it as most dark out of n+c titles, togainu no chi and sweet pool are also up there but Towa kinda looks for trouble due to him making art of peoples "desires".
IVE NEVER SEEN THAT CG, lucky me I guess. I got through 2 routes I think before I absolutely clocked out, like ive played some shockers but that game was something else. Stupid narrative, main characters personality changing to sadistic out of nowhere, awful CGs, it felt like shock value! Like I remember laughing while playing it but like what else could I do when faced with... that...XD. Easily the worst visual novel ive ever played, like it almost feels like a moral failing just knowing that game exists XD!
Guys, anyone knows if we will get another LD1 game ?
I would obviously LOVE to. Even another spinoff could be fine but id love to have another MAIN game.
How likely do you think it is ?
If theres any official info about whether Yura or her team said anything pls let me know.
In the meantime ill explain why i think it may or may not happen imo :
MAY NOT HAPPEN :
- yura and the LD1 scenario people who did all other games didnt participate in the last LD1 game Mr.Giancarlo (yura didnt draw the art at least)
- the company created another series already which is friendly:lab (2023) and a very short game ani asobi (last month!) so it may imply that they are done with LD1
- the last main game released is bad egg in 2018 so its from 8 years ago, if we didnt hear about another main game until now its very unlikely we would get another one if we take that info alone (especially considering that bad egg was announced like in 2010-12 and only got released in 2018)
-they already made an after story for all capos (bad egg) which is meant to be a closure
- because of bad egg, the bar for a new main game would maybe be too high? because bad egg is very long AND very scenario oriented
-since it would actually be the 3rd main game of the series it means the people buying it would need to have played the other 2 or at least 1 of them, which from a commercial perspective isnt worth the time and effort because the sales woulnt be as high as for a game that you can start without having played the rest. Bad egg was in between this because theres a "sequel" part but its very small compared to the whole main route which tells another story. You could play bad egg without having played LD1
- seeing the number of LD1 games they maybe used all the scenarios that were interesting already
- i dont know if in japan people still buy LD1 /bad egg a lot. In the west we got the eng release recently but i dont think theyd decide to make another game because of recent western releases of the game
- since bad egg took so long to release a lot of people lost the interest for LD1, and a lot of people didnt like the change of voice actors. So maybe bad egg didnt sell as much as it was supposed to be? especially considering it took 8 years of work so it was probably very expensive
MAY HAPPEN :
- LD1 is still the biggest series from the company and they make money from it today still
- they still post a lot about LD1 on their twitter acc
- a few months ago LD1 og game got an official eng release and is now on steam so it brought new fans to the game (im part of them) + i think i heard it sold well
- the last LD1 games are the switch version (with a few new cgs and voice acting) from 2022 and Mr.Giancarlo "the boss" in 2024 so its still fairly recent
- i just did the "additional scenario" parts from Mr.Giancarlo and as @XD92 said theres new characters and it presents a new threat, and this looks like a prologue
- SPOILER OF THE BAD EGG ENDINGS
almost all of LD1 bad egg ends are open ends and look like the end of a season rather than the end of the whole series. If you go back to rockwell with bakshi, then the game tells you that DG and CR:5 will fight for Daivan and that CR:5 will try to get the emblem back, etc. So basically the story is far from finished, and this confrontation CR:5 vs DG could be a whole game on its own. Same for the ending where gian goes back to CR:5 and they will create Los Angeles together, with DG trying to get Gian back. This could be a whole game too.
- we dont have a bakshi "after story" unlike for the other 4 love interests of gian
- recently there was a stage play of LD1 in japan so it implies that the series is still popular in japan
