What does your family think of you playing games, reading manga, or watching anime?

I was wondering how does your family and friends think of you playing games, reading manga or watching anime?

My family doesnt care about me playing games but for anime it was different, my mum was ok with it (i even got her to watch some of them and she likes it). My sister doesnt understand it and looks down on it. My dad didnt like it but now is ok with it and doesnt mind me watching it.

Hmm, I just tell them to not disturb me since it's none of their business & they don't seem to care at all. (manga, games, animes, gunplas)

Family: More or less don't really care.

Friends: Don't approve it so much.

Society in my region: Absolutely deemed it as NG.

Honestly, I don't talk about it to people simply because of the factor where people will discriminate heavily against these types of hobbies. Games on the other hand that is from the western market, society in my region is okay with. Just not the eastern goods and media. In short, they're pretty xenophobic about it.

I don't think my parents are that keen on it, but I think I made it pretty clear that it is something I enjoy and don't plan to drop, so they basically are in the not-caring category. My brother kind of likes it as well, but mostly gaming.

Some of my friends are into gaming, but none of them are really into manga/anime but I don't think they really look down on it either, which is nice. Or of course if they do they don't show it around me haha.

I don't really talk about liking manga/anime where I am to most people, because while games are pretty universally accepted everywhere, there still seems to be a stigma against manga/anime and people look down on you for it. Even in university I stopped drawing in some classes because comments people beside me would make (I would sleep instead, fair trade).

I don't think i ever told my parents. Although i don't think they know what anime is anyway :D. Never really ever told my friends.
Probably why a singed up here, so i could have people to talk to about it.

I remember I watched Sword of the Stranger with my father, but that anime dosent have big eyes and unnatural hair colors.
I just told him it was a "Japanese animated film". :D

Hmm... Family doesn't mind :p (since I'm taking Japanese class, dad is like are you going to marry a Japanese girl?) Relatives don't care and some also watch~ Friends don't care and some watch as well... Not that I have many friends to speak of... Society... When did I ever care what society thought? Animes: Parent ask if I understand what they are saying.... Got sisters into watching some of them.... Friends are into anime cuz DBZ is anime....

Games: Parent don't care... Sisters also plays it... Those dancing and singing so can't say anything bad about it... Don't need to mention friends on this....

Mangas: Same with parent... Sisters don't care..... Got all my friends into it too.....

My family are pretty much ok with me liking Manga, Anime, and Video Games. My dad does not care and just ignores it, but my mom plays video games and really like anime conventions. (Even though she does not watch anime.)

Mother thinks all of it is porn, brother doesn't care about it anymore, and the gf thinks alot of it I shouldn't be watching (Anything from little fanservice, to nudity) But I personally don't care what anyone thinks, Not only do I watch Anime for my enjoyment, but it helps me medically.

Yes, I have manic depression, and Anime is basically my only therapy for it. Good guess.

On an other note about myself....basically the only ones who know my interest in anime and japnese cultures as well as the ability to understand it... Is you ppl.

Yeah I'm not very open about it except while online. Sometimes it comes up in certain situations, but those are few and far between. And because I don't have many people to talk about anime and manga to offline, I come to site like this so I have an outlet for discussion. :)

They're pretty much ok with me involved in such things. They just don't like it when I watch or draw devils from the anime series I am watching. Haha.

Depends really, I have no one whom I can discuss Anime with IRL, but that doesn't make me any less discouraged.

While i am a complete weirdass otaku, i still feel the need of engaging regularly in actual IRL human interaction. I do
feel lonely being all by myself. At least i have a couple of friends that share my same interests. In fact i have one working
on my costume for tomorrow otaku convention right now.

To be honest, i think that regardless of what they may thing everyone should feel better surrounded by friends who respect them, accept them for what they are supporting them.

Yeah its, a bit lonely indeed. Friends like that is awesome :) And I my self love fellow crazy otaku's and generally all you ppl who are a bit "weirdos" haha. 'Weirdos' as in UNIQUE, and not afraid to be so ! (do not mean to imply 'has to be shown to everybody' but in your own heart and mind at least)

I myself is actually incredible grateful for not being just a clone of everybody else, and sayings like: 'you have to be more normal, more like most ppl' is just repugnant too me. I mean, lol why would I want that, thats not strength nor beauty.

It takes more character to be something unique after all, despite all resistance and norms. I keep saying/or thinking, almost a bit discriminatory lols, but its almost become sort of a proverb to me now that: being just like everybody else, is an insult to me. Those who think that it would be a compliment I think don't see some deeper values or perhaps are not so familiar with what the majority consists of, if only most ppl/majority would actually be something worth praising, then perhaps it wouldn't be so bad. But I think we know that the majority is not something to brag about. So thats why.^^ So who would wanna be a narrow minded, closed minded, sheeple that don't have the guts to expand yourself and grow as a person but rather just confirm to the masses ? any volunteers ?

p.s. No offense if anyone would actually prefer to do so though, If I myself would want too I would, just without shaking my head at all the "weirdos" who choose not too. umh, this is going to turn into a long post if I where to actually try and explain everything, I'll just quit here :P even though a lot more could be said. OKi just this more, I don't mean to judge anyone who choose whatever, except those that choose that other route and points fingers at the ones who don't. I agree with that, but then again, there are those (Like me for example) who have trouble connecting to people IRL, and so fall into a state of mind where they feel that there are no problems being exempt from real life.

I don't understand where people stand on what is "Normal". From what I see, everybody has their little quirks, their issues, problems, etc. that make them different somehow. What do they expect from us? To be like everybody else? As you said, I personally would rather not be a clone of somebody, that would just take out all the fun of being me. So I agree with you on that.

Here in Spain you are branded as a freak if you like anime/manga/videogames, i have never understood that.
