But they can't shut down websites that are located outside of their country, or that's what I thought atleast. Where is AS located anyway?

I know that a lot of forums like this along with torrent and warez sites were recently blocked in the UK.

But as far as Chinese sites being shut down its pretty hard to do since they dont adhere to the U.S. and UN led fight against piracy. China,North Korea, and Russia are among the leaders in copyrighted piracy, hacking, and identity theft in the world. Some of these countries send gifted hackers to school to fine tune their hacking skills for government use. Countries can block websites located in their country just like China, Korea, Russia and other countries block websites that they dont want their people to see.

Most Communist dont believe in free open web for their people like the more Democratic countries have and they block a lot of available web content to their people that they think might cause problems with their beliefs and, government and leadership. And yet they are among the world leaders in hacking, identity theft, fraud and money theft.

Since they dont adhere to the fight against piracy its pretty hard to shut sites located in their country down. Its up to individual countries to block them if they choose to.

I wouldn't worry about this site being shut down. Fighting against online piracy has been going on since the late 90`s. No real progress has been made. Its more of a losing battle. Even in countries that fight piracy. People use vpn`s and hacked routers. Sometimes some sites like these are shut down and then others like it start up again under slightly different names. Torrent sites are gone after more than sites that just have host outside file-host links.

Unless this site gets completely shut down if it just gets shut down in your country you can always find a good vpn to gain access to the website. For those that dont know about VPN sites they allow you to use ip`s located all over the world so you could get choose an ip in Korea, China or any country not blocking the website to gain access to this website.

I personally like file-host links over torrents peer to peer, ftp, etc.because unlike most torrent links file-hosting sites usually encrypt their files. It helps some downloading encrypted files over once that arent encrypted for isp`s that monitor what you download.

Ive known of a lot of people getting warning letters fro their isp`s for downloading unencrypted torrents. Some of the letters even came from the music ,movie industries etc. When files are unencrypted your isp and anyone else monitoring can see exactly what you are downloading. Food for thought. When you are using a vpn though anyone outside your isp cant track the files to your address since your ip location is changed with the use of vpn.

Few end users ever (downloaders)get in trouble but it happens occasionally and has happened to people in the past so it really helps to cover yourself (as a just in case) by choosing encrypted files over non-encrypted. No one ever worries about consequences until after the fact. My take on it is better to be safe than sorry and cover yourself as much as possible.

How does one know if the files are encrypted or not? Is the sites linked to on AS encrypted?

If the files one wants to download are not encrypted, then how does one encrypt them without downloading them first?

To put it really, really simply: encrypted = with password.
For example, every time you compress your file using 7zip (using "add to archive"), you have an option to add password. It does not only add password, tho. It also adds encryption (AES encryption).
Using SSH and similar is also a method of encryption.
And no, even when you use VPN the files' downloads CAN be tracked back to you. It's more work for them to do that, but it's possible. They usually don't bother with it, so it's safer.

Well you are partially right and partially wrong about VPN`s being traceable. It all depends on the VPN you choose. Some are and some aren't traceable.

Technically unless you are a genius on the web the government can track pretty much anyone but as you stated " its more work for them" and they normally wont bother with you because the time and money to go those extra steps usually aren't worth it for them to go after the average person.

VPN`s are legally supposed to log your ip`s but there are some that go against the flow and delete their stored data. Some right away, some, every day and some once a week. So in essence if the vpn is deleting all their data its that much harder for you to be tracked. You just have to do your research.

I couldn't find any rules in the faqs about certain types of outside links being against the rules so i apologize if this is not allowed.

Anyway for anyone interested in VPN`s read this site. It lists the best secure VPN`s on the net. Most people I know that have done the research like the second VPN on this list more than any other VPN (TorGuard) because they dont store any user data at all.

Check out this site i you are interested in choosing a good VPN. Take note the paid VPN`s are always going to be more secure than free ones.

You mentioned 7-zip but the more widely used Winrar can also encrypt files. Both programs are advisable to have on your computers. Files split with 7-Zip for instance will not extract using Winrar.

Depending on the method of deleting, the data can still be restored. Again, that's even more work and it's probably done only in "extreme cases".
I agree with the "paid VPN is more secure than free". I'd phrase it like "paid VPN is more likely to be (more) secure" though, because there are always exceptions.
Yeah, I mentioned 7zip, but only as an example.
