One of the crest of a country in my story I'm writing...

Hey since there aren't anyone who posted on this section yet, so I guess I will kick it off (I seems to enjoy kicking sections off, is fun ^^) Anyway, I've designed a country's crest for a nation in my story, known as United Provinces. Here is the picture:

Pretty please with this crest as you might have figured I suck at drawing and can only draw in 2D without shadow :/

Give feed back and comment. I haven't thought of colour theme yet but is probably going to be on the line of bright red and golden sort of thing, a bit royal like if you know what I mean.

It's a good start, but it's a bit overladen - most crests are quite simple, since they are supposed to be memorable. Personally I'd reduce the complexity and amount of text a bit. ;)
In the middle of a crest you also usually have the national animal or something of major significance - and all writing goes around it (and is usually composed out of a single line).

That was a single line in the middle, it says "May Lux Lucis Rector Nostrum Semita" (Suppose to translate into May Light Guides Our Path in Latin.)

One thing about animal is that I can't draw them, otherwise I would xD

Haha, I only type up the Special Chapters, otherwise the whole thing is done by hand xD

You were on the right track with the design but I think if you used various objects to represent what those words are it would make the crest more appealing. Crests are meant to represent and say this is who we are, this is what we are proud of. Maybe something like golden flames flowing from the sword to represent retribution for example. It seems like you want to jam a lot of things on the crest and that can easily be done by using one symbol to represent many things. Say we have a sword and golden flames to represent retribution, but if we throw in a shield in the mix behind it and maybe use a pair of swords crossing we have both intervention and retribution all in one. But it doesn't stop there, put a small crack in the shield and now we have something that also represents both sacrifice and hardships endured through a revolution, and the noble red and gold colors can represent nobility. Then you could top it off with "May Lux Lucis Rector Nostrum Semita" in a circle around it or something for added epicness.

Just a few ideas off the top of my head how you can use a few symbolic things to represent many.

Haha :D Hopefully my skills will have improved by then. But unfortunately I have very little skills in drawing even though I quite like to draw. Oh well, I guess I've to channel all that to the science then ;P

Yeah, I agree that.. Theres too much text.

Most crests have a simple 1 liner, and the rest is symbolized by patterns and colors.
Just like country flags.

Hm...I do try not to add too many text, maybe I just have a fetish for text due to my incapability to draw well xD

Anyway I think text shows order and intelligence, and that country is consist of highly educated people so that's another reason ;P
