Visual Novel - Tablet PC Problem

Hi, the following issue:

When I play older VNs such as Amorous Professor Cherry or Let's Meow Meow I got the problem of having a very small screen (well high resolution screen and old game... I know). But if i switch ingame to fullscreen, the ingame screen keeps it small size and the rest of the screen gets black.

My tablet:
Acer Iconia W700 (max. 1920x1080 px)
Intel Core i3
64 GB
Intel (R) HD Graphics 3000
Windows 8, 64 bit, up to date

I already tried various compatibility modes and options (XP, 98, admin rights, scaling, colors...), I have the actually K-Lite Codec Pack installed and got DirectX 11. I even changed the screen resolution and that seems to work until I change ingame to fullscreen, then I have the same problem as before. I even played with the Intel graphic driver scaling options (Keep aspect ratio, stretch to fit screen - nothings working).

Note: On my Windows 8 Pro, AMD Athlon 64 x2, 32 bit, Desktop PC (ATI Radeon HD-5500), the games are working fine and fullscreen is how it should be.

Another note: Actually I'm using Display Changer, but that's no solution for me (min. 800x600 px).

Hope for your help.

That is more of a limit imposed by the studio that made the game, than a problem. Most old titles like for example Cleavage, Kanojo no Shinyuu, Kanojo no Hahaoya, Cat Girl Alliance etc don't operate on full screens unless your native resolution is set around 800x600, and that is by default. There is a way to counter this and force the game to go full screen at HD resolution but in all honestly you do not want that. The graphics were sketched originally at a very low def resolution and the moment you will force it to, let's say stretch to 1920x1080[HD] resolution all you will see are ugly bloated pixel filled picture which honestly is worse than censorship Japan imposes on it's "porn" goods.

Though I must make this clear, not all old games behave like this. Many titles perform beautifully at all resolution. It's just a few selected studios that messed some of their games up. Your best bet would be to either wait for the studio to release a retouched version of the game sometime in the future or use the Magnifier from the Windows applications.

Thank you for your answer. May I ask for the methode to force the game in to full screen at HD resolution? Like I wrote at the beginning, nothing works for me.

Argh, I was hoping you wouldn't ask that. Honestly the workaround for that is pretty mumbo jumbo stuff. For starters you need to have a Windows that DOESN'T install updates involving graphic/lcd drivers. Also you need to set your graphic card software to "Maintain aspect ratio" in it's scaling options which by the way is a pain in the ass if you have an ATI. Trust me, I know it first hand. Still, good luck.

Well it seems you misunderstood me. I have a problem with my tablet, not the Desktop PC. So the graphic card is Intel (R) HD Graphics 3000. I already set my graphic card software to Maintain (Keep) aspect ratio (it's the only option for 1920x1080). Well, I already installed all updates from Windows 8... which means I have no chance without deinstalling the updates? No thanks. It seems I have no luck, but thank you.

Note: ATI works flawless.

Another note: I will stick with Display Changer. It works, at least.

The difference isn't far off since Windows 8 is essentially an OS that is capable of running on a tablet as well as a PC, it's high point being the "touch screen" ability. The reason I mentioned issues with Windows update is that I have read it on many forums that the update basically overrides all scaling options of graphic cards by making registry changes to how the OS will behave if a software tries to run at a resolution lower than the recommended native resolution. Some people use D3D to workaround games that run only on full screen but that is exactly the opposite of what you desire, hence I didn't mention it.

About your note stating ATI running flawless, allow me to respectfully disagree by showing you this screenshot > ATI Bug

Even though this has nothing to do with your hardware setup, the only way to get around that bug is to set the resolution to a lower figure and then select one of those three options. Afterwards reset the resolution back and the bug will force the options to grey out again but will retain the settings. But this method itself doesn't work for me thanks to the fantastic registry changes that Windows Updates did and now, no matter what I do these options just stay grayed out. So yea I love ATI but it's far from flawless.

Anyways point being no matter what you try, if a game isn't designed to go full screen past a certain resolution, then no matter what setting one employs there is only so much that can be done "forcefully" to stretch it. So using Magnifier or Display Changer or anything else that is ingeniously clever is your only best bet.

PS: Btw, there is a patch floating around that fixes Scaling issues for old games but I didn't post em here for 2 reasons. Firstly, most links are dead and secondly it was made for Windows 7. But still something to keep an eye out for if ever such a thing is created for Windows 8.

You got my thanks.

Note: ATI works flawless... at least for me.
