SOPA / PIPA
Stop Online Piracy Act. / Protect IP Act.

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), also known as House Bill 3261 or H.R. 3261, is a bill that was introduced in the United States House of Representatives on October 26, 2011, by House Judiciary Committee Chair Representative Lamar S. Smith (R-TX) and a bipartisan group of 12 initial co-sponsors. The bill, if made law, would expand the ability of U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods. Presented to the House Judiciary Committee, it builds on the similar PRO-IP Act of 2008 and the corresponding Senate bill, the PROTECT IP Act.

How SOPA Would Work
SOPA (bill text) sets up a variety of ways for the U.S. government to block sites that are seen to be infringing on intellectual property. The bill is tailored towards the entertainment industry to protect movie studios, TV networks and record labels from having foreign websites illegally copying and distributing copyrighted works.

Along with the Protect IP Act of 2011, here are the ways the U.S. government can enforce the proposed laws.

1. Force ISPs to block access to Domain Name System servers to infringing foreign sites.
- Here is the pertinent portion of Section 102 of SOPA: A service provider shall take technically feasible and reasonable measures designed to prevent access by its subscribers located within the United States to the foreign infringing site (or portion thereof) that is subject to the order, including measures designed to prevent the domain name of the foreign infringing site (or portion thereof) from resolving to that domain name's Internet Protocol address.
2. Force search providers to make such sites that have been flagged as infringing undiscoverable.
Prevent the foreign infringing site that is subject to the order, or a portion of such site specified in the order, from being served as a direct hypertext link.

3. Force payments processors to shut down the ability for infringing sites to make money.
Suspend its service from completing payment transactions involving customers located within the United States or subject to the jurisdiction of the United States and the payment account.

4. Force Internet advertisers to cease doing business with an infringing site.
Prevent its service from providing advertisements to or relating to the foreign infringing site that is subject to the order or a portion of such site specified in the order.

At 1st I was like:
(Sorry for the colourful language)

Then I was like:

today will be noted as world biggest strike on internet! dammit i couldn't open wikipedia for a whole day! and i bet this is just the beginning!

Damm it.. thats gonna affect some of the file hosting sites... maybe even BT sites.. :@

Biggest threat for me where i use wikipedia as my first reference for studying , and it will greatly affect file hosting sites :dead:

I don't really understand what blacking out Wikipedia will do to help the cause? I doubt the big shot CEOs sit on their big comfy rotating chair in the top floor of a 100 story skyscraper and browse Wikipedia all day. If anything it's just affecting the regular users...If they were hoping to make people send (moar) complaints with this it's rather just a misdirected anger...Only way this concept could work is if the whole Internet blacked out.

Also, I think AS is hosted outside the American continents by a foreign ISP? So I don't think this will affect AS.

Wikipedia's protest blackout is a script. If you're in dire need to access the site you block the script by something like NoScript or using a web proxy that removes scripts like Glype.

And yes, AS is outside the US.

There has been little to none coverage (outside of various blogs) about SOPA/PIPA in the USA. This is made to raise awareness, so people can find out what is going on.

Lets not forget about the next upcoming thing either, when all those new domain registrant middleman crap decide to start requiring official ID in order to register a new name, that way any agency can go after individuals too, whether sopa passes or not.

i think some people here, still misunderstood where does SOPA and PIPA real threat...
not just concerning the files you wish to download anymore. when SOPA activate 100% there'll be no more youtube for you! and most information will have to passed the SOPA cencorship before released in the internet!

seriously! this isn't just a threat that will coming next month, or next year! it's happening right now under your nose! and it'll be started to effect in 21th January. that means, 2 days from now!

OMG...... now im understand now what SOPA/PIPA things... Errr.... so what we must do then for cancelling/slowwing this ??

Thank you,at this time do they pause these bills? And they will rewrite them back in febuary,Is this right? Is this the situation now? Sorry to ask so many question.

For now it lost support, but it will be back sooner rather than later - in one form or another.

I've just signed up my death warrant name in the online petition against SOPA yesterday.
Did the same thing when that thing about MW2 came out.
