MangaGamer had their database compromised earlier today and now it has been posted online. The passwords are hashed and unsalted, so if you have an MG account you're one step away from having your password posted online for all to see. You should change your MG password at every site you use it on. No CC information was stolen as MG doesn't handle that themselves.

A reminder that this shit is happening all the time, even with companies most people would think are secure, such as Sony. Use a different, secure password at every site if possible. -dk382

With agressive hackers these days, I'm so glad I have a password manager installed that randomizes my password on every site. Do you guys have any password managers too?

What could be their motive behind the attack?
It may have something to do with their latest lineup. Do you think the hacker protests the new genre's planned for release? a.k.a. the Yaoi and Otome game that MG's gonna release. Or it's just a shamefest of some sort.

Using the same password for every site isn't good... Good to hear that the problem is MG user accounts only... Maybe those hackers think that they will have credit card information when they have access to MG website database... oh that's why they post full database...

This is actually funny.

On my side, I'll just make a cynical comment that they (MG) totally deserved that bitchslap for producing horrible translations to the already crappy games and trying to mooch off even more money from people who actually buys those games.

I don't have an MG account anyways, so I'll just sip my soda as I watch the chaos ensue.

Some self righteous hacker bragged about doing it (on twitter complete with links to the document containing the info (his account was later removed though I saw the post myself before that so I can verify) because in his eyes loli hentai was the same as actual child porn. He did later make a post on MG's forums apologizing saying he made a mistake

Ah, but aren't those T/L guys they hire are popular free lancing visual novel T/L's before?

But remembering passwords are a hassle. I'm even afraid that my phones gonna be stolen and all my saved passwords will be stolen.

Too bad we don't see him apologizing to users.
:gakuran_sigh:

I don't know if apologizing, or trolling.

I'm not super guarded with my passwords. If I make tons of different ones, I'll just forget them all. So I have maybe 5 or so that I cycle between sites (often choose one depending on the type of site it is).

Other than credit card stuff, there really isn't a whole lot online that would be overly problematic if someone, for some strange reason, wanted to access it.

Edit: looking at his twitter/forum apologies I'm very suspicious that this is a clumsy attempt to back peddle and hopefully tone down any legal action.

i think this guy just say that to cover his action. Cause troubles to MG business because he think MG sell child porn? If it's truth then this guy is really really idle.

By admitting his faults on the forum, isn't he giving away his identity? (IP address)

I don't think so ^^. Just use proxy, he can hidden his IP and use VM to fake his system. Maybe he can use a hacked server to access MG forum. Hacker get hacked... lol.

I see, but I don't see the point in exposing user accounts if all he wanted was to remove child porn. He could have just wiped away the website. Thats much more effective if he wanted to reach his goals.

I think he said that to cover his action. We never know why he did that... maybe his reason is to prove that he can hack a website...

I find that ridiculous yet possible at the same time..~ Maybe this is just a publicity stunt too or an attack from a fellow competitor.

Meh, I really don't feel the need to secure the vast majority of my accounts. The ones I do have decent passwords. If someone wants to go to the effort of stealing my online identity as FinalPyre... I'll just make more mirror accounts with one of my other online identities. I have very little sensitive information online, other than a select few shopping centers and banking accounts.

YMMV, but I use it for convenience as well as security. When you have different logins for different sites in the tune of dozens, the difference will start to become apparent. It also makes changing passwords―which I do periodically―a breeze, as you only need to generate a new password and save it without even remembering it at all. It protects your password from being handed out via torture! (Not that it protects you from the torture itself, but eh.)

Of course, on the security side, using LastPass alleviates you from the problems posed by keyloggers in case your system got infected. If you only use the browser addon, the only thing you need to pay attention to is the security of your browser, as a wild addon or plugin (oh, hey, Flash!) can compromise it and take over control of your logged-in LastPass account.

Anyway, kinda off-topic here.

Just like FinalPyre I use a handful of different passwords depending on the type of site (forum, shopping, online banking,email..) so those things can get annoying if one site is hacked and you have to change passwords for several other sites as well but it's not a threat towards any other type of site. There are just too many different sites nowadays that want a new password and it became annoying to remember each and every one of it. The issue with password creators is that you're f*cked once you loose your access to it due to some reason. My problem with all of this however, is that hackers seem to go for "normal" people recently more than for those who'd actually deserve it (multi-millionaires, corrupt politicians, super greedy sellers..). Recently I've been wondering about the "why". I don't want to protect thieves but when I think about it..When stealing online the risks attached don't vary too much so that the work-input to hack a normal person like you and me isn't sooo much less work than hacking someone who'd deserve it.So what's happened to the ethics of thieves? :/ In 2013 I was really amused and happy when in Germany some guys dressed up as the cookie monster and stole a golden cookie replica and wrote a ransom note to the factory owners to donate a huge amount of cookies to some local children's hospital and 1000€ to an animal shelter to get their golden cookie back. The factory however only gave away cookies but to many different community organizations and the cookie was returned (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diebstahl_des_goldenen_Leibnizkekses). That's the kind of thieving I want to see. :P Same goes for some Anonymus hacks against the Israeli government etc for breaking international human rights for example. Even if the thieves were enriching themselves with their theft I wouldn't mind it as much if they went after the bad guys for once. So why is it that the world's population once again fights to eradicate each other rather than the bad influeneces out there? :gokiko_wut:
