soooo I'm wondering about people that like to be anonymous on the internet~

In what ways are you (or prefer to be) anonymous?
Why do you want/like to be anonymous?
Explain why it's important (or not) to you~
Maybe a few risks?

I just happen to hear about this random stuff from time to time~ I don't relly understand the whole concept of being anonymous, but it sounds interesting. I mean, I think there's a certain amount that's important to have, but just how much do people need? How much is too much? (or illegal?? x-x)

You can also tie this into other things like very..creepy love letters some random person gives you x-x (I mean like, they mail it to you! x-x). Then there's restricted calls where you don't know the number calling... (idk how they do that x-x).

There's lots of projects and stuff i heard about~ here's a few:
http://www.anonymox.net/
https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I2P
http://invisibleip.sourceforge.net/iip/
https://www.torproject.org/
https://freenetproject.org/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duck_Duck_Go
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymous_(group)

Sooo is it just me, are a few people paranoid? orrr is there something important that people just don't know about? Should people care about what information is being collected about them?

I don't share phone numbers, address', real life - name, family, friends, work, school
I'm not really 100% sure why.. it could be because i don't have to worry about peoples opinions because i won't actually care if i'm anonymous, where as in real life if you do something stupid; rumors can go around and people might look at you funny without even getting to know you. Its not that important i just prefer it =P
Risks!?
Stalkers...Stalkers everywhere!

The EFF's HTTPS Everywhere has little to do with anonymity. It merely forces your browser to load many well-known websites (and others you add via your own rulesets) with SSL and thus encrypt your connection to minimise the chance of interference and interception.

Also, merely caring about anonymity and making efforts to stay anonymous on the 'net doesn't necessarily associate you with the Anonymous collective.

I don't believe the notion of being "too anonymous." Being anonymous is being anonymous. It's a pure boolean equation with only 1 and 0, yes and no, true and false as the answers. "Too anonymous" is just a concept in the minds of those in league with surveillance laws fearing circumvention and trying to tell people to keep their anonymity to the level where it can be traced back to them.

However, as we know, laws have stopped serving the people long ago, and are one of the main reasons this very issue you're bringing up in this thread has become of much importance lately.

I like being generally anonymous.. I'm honest about my first name, age.. sort of where I live ( I don't usually specify what city unless I get to know someone).. but I prefer to keep things like my phone number, full name and address anonymous..

I think many people (especially young people) put way too much personal things online (especially on facebook) and at some point will regret something that they posted online.. especially photos

I'm one of those people~ XD I put everything and anything online and somehow ended up being scarred for life x-x
still~ even if I or them don't know each other, I still feel bad if someone's feelings were hurt x-x People are still people afterall.
I also find it weird how random people will try to talk to me using my name... and i don't even know the person x-x
Which reminds me, it's kinda odd how in usa friends won't use each other's names unless they're like talking about someone. orrr getting their attention?
anyways~ It's unbelievable how I'm still hooked to the internet XD I might take a break after a while and do some things I wanted to do~ maybe when i don't have school x-x

Being anonymous, and why people like to keep information private is a matter of self-protection.

There's a safety feeling about being able to interact with someone without being subject to possible retaliation in case of misconduct and/or conflict.

If you are gay, you can openly talk about it aslong as you don't disclose your personnal information, this way even if you happen to meet someone who hate gays, he won't be able to punch you or harass you, you can simply 'mute/remove' on whatever discussion platform you're using, and he can no longer interact with you.

I took the gay exemple, but it's the same for discussing about political or religious beliefs. Basically everything that is 'sensitive' and in which people usually have firm beliefs and tends to go conflictual about. When being anonymous on the internet, you can discuss about everything without the risk of being shuned by your peers. Because if they do shun you, you can just ignore those who do, or find another community that share your mindset.

Oh and yes, people who do not keep some information private tends to get some troubles. Rumors can spread, and we all know about peoples who got fired after posting party picture on facebook while they were supposed to work -> their boss found it -> fired

Hmm....Well I do suppose I like to be anonymous, and for the same reasons most do. (You know what those are. XD)
Personally, I just don`t like the thought of being monitored. It freaks me out to think I`m being watched all the time. And as for the risks, saying you like to be anonymous is essentially evoking the 5th amendment which is a pretty useless one IMO. All it does is say "I have something to hide and I`m not going to tell you what it is." which makes you suspicious beyond words.

And on the "six strikes" thing, it doesn`t worry me too much. Specifically the line "hardcore pirates are not the target of the system.". To me that says "We want to scare you, but because we know it would turn out problematic we aren`t actually going to do anything to you.". I think they know it would take too much time and effort to arrest every pirate under those ISP`s. They also know that it would cause the biggest uproar yet from the people opposing the anti-piracy and monitoring things they`ve been throwing at everyone for the past few years. (All of which have failed I might add.)

It just doesn`t scare me anymore.

the interesting thing is that they don't say what they mean by hardcore. I think it has to do with VPN, encryption, and other things people might use. Hardcore not meaning people who frequently download stuff, but what they do to prevent being caught.
This is probably the cheapest way they could come up with for now. It seems like a baby step toward sopa etc.

Hmm I wonder if this thread of your ~SnowAngel~ ; explains some things I was wondering about you... Is this why you completely ignored my pm regarded your VM wall on your profile that I could not see when I wanted to post you a message, and decided to be dishonest about it, by just claiming ignorance, then just ignoring me ?...

I'm wondering a bit now if perhaps you actually rather would be dishonest towards me in order to be gentle and not hurt anyones feelings ~? I'm at least trying to give some benefit of the doubt.

If thats the case this would be an opportunity for you to clear it up.
It would be nice to actually clear things up a bit don't you think.......

I'm not a harsh person, but it doesn't make anyone feel very good being lied too for no apparent reason.

/////////////

Regarding the subject topic. I think anonymity is necessary when the powers that be completely disregards peoples right for privacy and tries to run a train over it....If anybody thinks the stuff we hear about in the news is shocking.....then you would probably pull your hair out regarding the stuff that happens in secret and the talks being held behind closed doors outside of the publics knowing...They want "minority report" irl. And they use such lame slogans as, if you got nothing to hide then you got nothing to worry about...as a way to sway part of the public opinion too their side in order to reach "critical mass" that they can ENFORCE the most ludicrous things on the population by force. And indiscriminately make everyone who opposes them seem like terrorists and criminals. All social manipulation.

And sadly it's been working well afaik for now. Their the ones telling you to trade your Liberties and Rights in exchange for Security ! At least for the feeble minded and scared.

Its a trap....e.g just like the journalist who stops reporting the news and instead starts making them....they simply creates problems so that people will accept their solutions to the problems they themselves make. Or like a medical company that makes the virus, and then sells the cure to the desperate masses afterwards. (ofc the fact they they also created the virus and let it loose in the first place is a secret ;])

FBI watching on you

What you're talking about? All secret services in respective countries are watching you and everyone else. Especially if you use Social Networks of any type. You don't have to believe it, just simply understand that there's always someone keeping a cache of data for various uses, other than the ones you already know of.

----------------------------

Anonymity, privacy, secrets and other privates. These things tend to be kept by the individuals for whatever reason it may be. Either for the good or the bad, that's dependent on the content and those who obtain it.

Naturally no one wants to reveal information about various topics that is great concern for them. But at the same time, nothing is ever kept truly hidden from those who seek specific information. In regards to the public and people, the moment you use the internet. Is the moment someone already started to track your activities. Be it the Internet Service Provider (ISP) who provided you the service of connecting you to the internet to malicious people seeking particular information to broker around.

Anonymity is good when there's obvious reasons why you don't want critical information or data to fall into the wrong hands. Such as your bank details, passwords or even main accounts that contain your full identity. But relying solely on that technology to circumvent those with ill intention won't always work.

In short, to sum it up, if you feel the information, message or detail you're going to put online is going to do more harm to you than good. Don't do it. No one wants to get fired by their boss for posting a bad comment about them at work or private on Facebook. Even twitter and Instant Messengers fall under this category.

Other than that, when doing something similar to online banking, ensure you see 'https' at the front of the site address to ensure that it is under a secure encrypted connection. If it doesn't have it, then don't enter personal information that can cause harm to you in reality, like financial information and details about your bank account.

That's all I'm going to say. The moment I was about to post this, my net was disconnected. Coincidence? Maybe. People keeping tabs on everything that goes online? It's real. With that said, it comes down to what you're doing and what they want with your activity logs.

My mom told me that about there being some truths in a joke when I was little. Ofc not always.

All though I think the sentiment is true...they are watching....or rather unknown intelligence institutions and 3rd party private companies do...they simply do things in ways that it avoids the spotlight....

Ah well. It seems I missed that. My apology, although I haven't heard of that saying. So that's new. I've heard a saying that goes by "everything has layers of truth" and "not everything is as it seems at first glance." And "every lie has a potion of truth hidden in it" is some prehistoric folks preach to me every so often.

Hmm... something like the best lies seem like the truth? (Thus the more truthful content the more it would seem like truth)

I think in many different countries it sounds different, but meaning one same thing
How it was in x-files?
The truth is out there

To be honest i dont even use a anti virus software. Its actually hard to catch nasty stuff if you are careful about which
sites you visit.

Agreed. Even though I have not watched X-Files, the general idea is there.

I feel the latest release of Cyber Security Laws in USA is concerning right now. Please check EFF for more details.

In general you should be using it to help remove as many virus and malicious files off your system to prolong its working lifespan. Same as using Anti-malware software and firewalls. This is simply to prolong the operating system running lifespan until the day you need to do a clean installation due to being unable to remove such unwanted files.

There's some add-on that gives a user safety rating of various sites you visit but it all comes down to your own judgement on your online activities.
