Kakashi Hatake. Naruto was one of my first anime growing up and nown as an adult, I recognize that the anime as a whole honestly isn't perfect and has many, many flaws but man I thought Kakashi was so cool and even now. I have so many figures of the guy. He's awesome.

One of my favorite anime is Demon Slayer and the character is Tanjiro Kamado.

Why him specifically? Because he's a rare example of a protagonist who isn't just a "good guy" but actually commands respect. He is kind but not naive, able to forgive but not lose his purpose. He's willing to suffer, but doesn't lose his humanity - even to demons. Plus, the visuals in the anime are just fire: every battle with Tanjiro is like a painting in motion. His "water breathing" style is an aesthetic high.


Here he is a true example of what strength, empathy, and character look like gathered in one person.

I'd argue that Kimblee and Envy are the more interesting characters amongst the cast. Kimblee is a lot of things, but a hypocrite is certainly not one of them. He spits out realism, unearth sophistry, and mocked escapism with every breath he took. Also, he's perfectly aware of how morally bankrupt he is in the eyes of society, and fully embraced it.

As for Envy, a single line that came outta his mouth, seals the deal for me:

"Do you hesitate to throw a piece of log into the fire, because you pity the tree they came from?" - Envy, on the ethics of using a philosopher's stone.

Very utilitarian and devoid of empathy. Not as much as Kyubey, though.

Kakashi Hatake, man I thought Kakashi was so cool and even now. I have so many figures of the guy. He's awesome.

Kakashi's not gonna like hearing this, but Might Guy is a lot more interesting than he is. Even mroe so, considering that Guy is born with nothing and climbed his way to the top, through sheer will and dedication. Hell, even Umino Iruka is a lot more interesting than either of them.

Iruka is basically Naruto's father figure. Maybe he doesn't stand out very much, but the sole reason that Naruto didn't ended up becoming like Pain and want to destroy the world, is because Iruka was there until Jiraiya (his godfather) can help him further as the prophecy dictated. Iruka is even chosen by Naruto himself to attend as his father for his wedding. That's how important Iruka is to the story. Shoutout to Sarutobi Hiruzen (Third Hokage) and Uchiha Itachi, too. Without them, the story whole would ended up very different.

Meh, the Mokonas are better. Better than Kirby or Rico from Penguins of Madagascar, when it comes to sheer storage space alone.

Meh, Frieza and his "monkey" insults are far more entertaining. Besides, Goku is just a deadbeat loser that pushed the duty to raise his son onto others (which might actually be better for Gohan, in hindsight). At that point, even if Piccolo NTR-ed Chi-chi, that monkeybrained Goku wouldn't even care. That's how dysfunctional their family dynamic is. That wanker Goku can just wank himself for the rest of his life.

• Serious pick (male): Okajima Rokurou (Rock) from Black Lagoon, and Sakuragi Rokurouta (An-chan) from Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin.
  • Honorable mention: Ryuugamine Mikado from Durarara!!
• Serious pick (female): Iwakura Rein from Serial Experiments Lain, and Honda Kyouko from Fruits Basket.
  • Honorable mention: Tenjou Utena from Shoujo Kakumei Utena.
• Joke pick (male): Vanir from Konosuba, and Shoukiin Kagerou from Inu x Boku SS
• Joke pick (female): Naganohara Mio from Nichijou and Takao from D-Frag!

Since the OP mentioned "anime", I didn't mentioned any great characters from numerous unadapted manga.
