As the title says, is it bad that i didn't like the supposedly amazing Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.. o-o.

Why would it be bad? It's your opinion.

not at all. I'm sure there are people out there that share the same opinion. personally, I didn't think it was that great, I was bored for the first few episodes and only liked it half way. still I wouldn't really put in my top ten.

also, WsE's avatar is sooooo creepy... :alonescared:

Seems like WsE is trying to scare people :runaway::foreveralone::alonescared:

Hmm but nope theres nothing really wrong with disliking something? xD As long as there some reason or whatnot~

Because it can be a poorly formed opinion.

I think we would be able to answer your question better, OP, if you elaborated on why you didn't think the anime was amazing.

Sure, but it is still an opinion. There's nothing wrong or bad about it. It's a subjective matter entirely. You may believe it's a poorly formed opinion, others might not. Kinda how opinions work. :>

No, there are such things as good opinions and bad opinions; good opinions being those that are well developed and bad opinions being those that are poorly developed.

Still waiting for the OP to post his reasoning; we'll decide from there whether or not it is a well developed opinion.

This is what you believe, and many believe. Some would call it common sense. I don't disagree with this. What you consider well developed others might think is not. This is all I'm saying.

Whether the OP chooses to elaborate is another matter though. :>

Yes, we shall wait for his response.

Well, guess ill elaborate a little.

After seeing it called a masterpiece over and over again i decided to watch it, and decided fairly quickly that i did like;
-Yoko. (Dat babe)
-The Setting. (The universe itself was well done)
-Animation. (Lotsamoneyzwasspenthere)

I liked these things about it but there was so much nagging me about it that i couldn't enjoy it much, those three points are nice and all but then there are the things i disliked.

-Corniest lines I've ever seen in an anime. ("BELIEVE IN ME WHO BELIEVES IN YOU!!" It wasn't just once either.. a "I can't lose to a guy like him!" used as a turning point in some fight scene is fine if it happens once or twice.. But almost every episode was face-palm worthy macho lines.)
-None of the characters felt original. (Kamina is just like ALOT of characters in these 'manly man' anime, my first thought was that he was similar to a manga 'Needless' i read ages ago before i really got into anime, and after I've actually gotten into anime there are many more.
Simons nothing original either, other then the large amount of drills involved with him.
I cant complain about Nia to be fair.)
-Too many.. (How do i describe this..) Uh, well things like Yokos shots will take down Gunmen.. SOMETIMES. Other times they'll just bounce of like nothing.
-After
Kamina dies
It got fairly rushed and the few interesting bits about the fairly predictable story fell away.

Ack, theres my mouthful and opinion on Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
:d

Unfortunately, I think you missed the point of that quote, as well as the entire message of the whole anime. That cliche quote served as a tool to break the common person's fear of believing in himself, as well as the common person's tendecy to gain "fake" self confidence through others. If you walked away from Gurren Lagann still thinking that that quote was a good quote to live by, then you missed the main message the director was trying to give you.

Allow me to explain. At first, Kamina tells Simon to "Believe in me, who believes in you!" And the reason why he said that is because Simon was a fearful child who didn't have faith in himself, but had faith only in others, specifically Kamina. Understanding that he only had faith in Kamina, he pushed Simon to have faith in Simon himself, using himself as a medium.

Although this is a good start to teaching Simon to have faith in himseslf, it is not necessarily a good thing that will last forever. Kamina knows that he can die any second on the front lines of battle. And when that happens, Simon would be left in the darkness once again. So, Kamina eventually told Simon this quote, (the true quote to live by):

Kamina said:
"Listen up Simon and don't forget: Believe in you, not in the me who believes in you; not in the you that believes in me. You should believe... believe in yourself!"

This is the true quote you must remember. It is the quote that defines the message of the director.

The transformation from the former quote to the latter quote proves that the first quote was not even a good quote; it only served as a catalyst to teach Simon to believe in himself. Basically, the director's reason for having both quotes is that he wanted to inspire or at least comment on the young generations of our time, which consists of many youths who simply don't have faith in themselves to do great things. He also comments on how many of these youths may in fact seem to achieve self confidence, but it is often fake, since they do so only through other mediums, i.e. their idols who allow them to have faith in themselves. An example of this is say an inspirational teacher in school. A student may seem to achieve self confidence by having that teacher inspire him with good words, but what will become of the student when that teacher is no longer there to guide him for whatever reason?

This also explains your second complaint about the anime, which is Simon's lack of originality. The reason why he seems unoriginal is because his role represents the common youth in our society who has no self confidence in himself. I don't think it has to be said that this does in fact represent many youths of our day. And how can the director send a message to our young generation without a main character that the youths can directly relate to?

I did not think Kamina's death was rushed. After reading my points above, I think you can understand a little more of why it was necessary for Kamina to die early in the story.

If the director wanted to show his audience why believing in others to believe in yourself was not a good thing, he would have to kill Kamina earlier, so that more time can be given to show the development and transformation of Simon, (who represents his young audience), from a man of little self worth to a man of great confidence.

I enjoyed it but the part about forgiveness and stuff at the end was rather juvenile and brought it under a common theme

There wasn't anything about it that made it really stand out

Some people loved it. Some people hated it. I personally loved it. It brought stupidity, manliness, crazy and mecha all in one. Gurren was made in 2007 you can't really expect it to be that plot driven. Hell new anime is either moe or just plain fan service that screw over the original work. His death was part of the story as much as it sucked it helped build Simon's character. I remember thinking to myself when I watched it that he'd come back to life... Gainiax should really stick with mech... or something close to mech. The medaka box animation is just subpar...

Gurren lagann didn't exactly strike me as awesome at first but in the end I found it pretty good or atlest decent enough for me to recommend it to others.

More importantly it taught me what I really can't stand about some anime/manga works and that is a lack of distinct main characters. Don't get me wrong! It's not like I hate shows where there are no "REAL" main character (K-ON for example)

It's just that somehow I have a habbit of often choosing one characters that I believe should be the main focus point and in this case that is Simon. But as we all know, Kamina has an big screentime up until a certain point. Won't mention the rest for those of you that don't know the story.
This made it very hard for me to like the show since Simon wasn't the "hero" or what your supposed to call him up until later on.
The same reason is why I hard a hard time with Shikabane Hime where Ouri was the main characters (from my point of view) but Keisei took up too much of that role until later on.

This happens from time to time and it sometimes get very frustrating. Hopefully I can get over this at some point and move on but that is why I always can't love Gurren lagann as much as I want. Kamina is such a great character so this feeling also ruins things on his behalf.

But whatever your feelings are towards Gurren Lagann is for you to make and I don't find it strange that your not liking it as much as others do. If that was the case then there should be a world rule that commands everyone to watch One Piece and like it!
